Our Bull is bothering cow of mine that had her first calf last May... she should have been bred back in late July Or August.... and I've run the ball with them since then but now the bull is showing interest does that Always mean that she is Not bred?

she is likely open - should be 3rd period if bred and I would think you could visually tell - if not preg check her and you will know
she will ride other cows or other cows will ride her some times if open

she could be bred ...we always pulled the bulls out around christmas or they were hard on the cows close to calving ..... think cows can show signs of heat while bred

It's not unusual for a heavy bred cow to get a lot of attention from other cows and the bull due to hormone levels. So no, it doesn't always mean the cow is open.

Put a picture of Rosie O'Donnel on the cows backside. That should get the bull out of the mood in a hurry.

I have nothing clever to put here.

If bred in July she will be due in March-April. Many times as the bred cow nears full term the hormones ratchet up to start the birthing process. These are for the most part similar or the same hormones that are at high levels during estrus and the bull is probably smelling those hormonal changes or increases. Many choose to not run a bull with close to calving cows for that very reason.

As late as it is I wouldn’t pregcheck her to much risk of losing the calf, if you have a good dairy man around they can “bump” her, actually its almost close enough you might be able to feel the head yourself.

I much Appreciate ALL the help!!! I might let out the 3 Last years calves with the Older Preggos (they should be weaned by now- Nov.1 they were segregated) Then I could move the bull in that area Alone.

Bull + alone = broken fences and headache. He's better off with the cows than tearing stuff up. If you only have 2 or 3 cows, sell him and hire someone to AI your cows. I knows it's a little more work, but it's hard to justify owning a bull for 3 calves per year.

Hence, why I fall calve - I utilize my neighbors bull and feed it through winter. I turn the bull in near Thanksgiving and pull in March. Aim for Sept 1 calving. This bull then goes to his heifers for his spring calving.

No A I. Here.... i will have 8 cows eventually here... 4 calves this year X the fingers. 6 calves in 2020, again Xing my fingers.

Both AI guys in this area said their stick rate was no more than 70%... and. .That I should have a good cleanUp Bull to run with them Afterwards.

70% is pretty decent. Standard procedure for those without a cleanup bull is to sync them, AI, then those that don't stick the first time get one more shot. If they don't stick on the second try, they get shipped and replaced by an animal that breeds on time. For someone like myself with limited pasture, getting rid of the bull makes room for another cow. By the time you have 8 cows you'll need to replace your bull. At the very least, for 3 cows you could buy a young bull in the spring and sell him in the fall. Should be easy to break even. You get your cows bred for free and don't have to keep a bull around for 12 months when you only need him for 2.

Problem is.....

I Like Having a Bull on my property

I didnt grow up with Cattle and Hunted on a 10,ooo acre ranch in Wyoming every year as a kid. The Rancher had Non polled Herefords. I remember taking my dirt bike from the shack we hunted in 5 miles back up to the Ranchers house to tell him one Bull stuck a horn in his other bull. Paul said " hmm.finally got some good Bulls"

My place is small but its mine and Yes its a glorified Hobby but worth a Lot to Me for more reasons than Money.

I had a small herd I started 20 years ago here. Built my sheds, fences, and Eventually my 30 x40 bull pen. Right before the Pen was finished . I had a Bad stroke..... Left side of me and speach gone! When i got out of the Hospital i told my Wife to Sell all the Cows and Bull....she did reluctantly. God touched me greatly ,and even though the specialists said I would be left side gone for life. I asked for prayer many times. I got 85% back of what I lost. 8 years of leaving my place Empty my Wife got a good work bonus and We bought two bred heifers at auction. So from that ...here I am. Labor of Love, money pit, more work than its worth.....I dont care its a Part of Me.

Thats why I appreciate All the advice, because I learn as I go.
