I’ve been thinking the same thing. I’m not afraid of it one bit on cats, but still trying to work through it on yotes. I was on expandapantraps twice today. I’ve got 3 dozen Bidger #3 that Dufresne modified for me 5 or 6 years ago. Still thinking

I think if your target animal can put it's foot on the trap jaw and the pan at the same time
The pan is to big. Leads to toe catches and misses
Just my 2 cents

I bought some used 450s from the shed that had a few expand a pans tacked to them and have caught several coyotes with them. No complaints from me.

That’s what I’ve been considering too. Seems like if it was a great idea they would have been doing it 100 years ago on most traps. Then again they didn’t have trailcam videos to help them out in their thought process and decision making. Still thinking. Not sold on it for coyotes

Big pans are not a new idea. Here is a Sterling mj 600 from the 70's that O'Gorman and Sterling built to try out. I believe the plan was to sell them to government agencies. It didn't pan out (pun intended)

Here is a picture of the underside of the pan. Its all factory. If it would have panned out as improvement they would still be offered that way.

Cool trap danny. Not being a smart butt; but that’s why I said on most traps. Why do you think big pans are not used more? If it was a great idea wouldn’t most traps be built with them?

No same post just worded my response poorly. I typed the question I was asking myself. Still curious of what danny thinks though.

Not saying they're right or wrong, but best doesn't always survive. Betamax, anyone?

Heck 25 years ago it was common to see traps with the pan cut down to be as small as possible. I am sure I have some that are that way.......jk

I think big pans are a fad like double jaws which are not a new idea either

I guess if a guy wanted a bunch of tripped traps those pans combined with a hair trigger should get the job done.

Nothing against the folks making them or folks wanting to try them but I think you would be sorry. Not just toe catches and tripped traps but what about all those nooks, crannies and protrusions on them? Wouldn't they get all tangled up in the brush, cable, chain ?

I'm all about trying new things and innovation but I don't get those pans at all.

I prefer the wild river pans myself, but only on cat traps.

That looks really good for cats from what I hear. Do you spray paint it or put something over the pan so it's not so shiny?

Enlarged pan for un-buried cat sets make good medicine. Not so good for buried sets.

These are powder coated with sand/gravel epoxied on.

I don't know if it's the slow DLS trap or the expanded pan but I get some shallow catches including toes. Proponents of exposed cat set would have you believe a cat will step in the center but I say " nay nay"

What besides the expand a pans would help getting that coyote to step where he needs to step even with subtle guarding and the trap being placed 6 to 8 inches back from the dirt hole as well as offset left or right 2 to 3 inches I still seem to have misses? No that I see what you guys are saying I think toe catches would defiently a happen with these.

I’m far from a cat guy as you know. But I ditched the MONSTER pans that pretty much fill up the jaws and just stuck with the somewhat expanded PIT step down pan.

Really eliminated the iffy catches.

Like Mercer, I like a “bigger” pan for exposed sets (bigger, not huge).
