Hi Jeff, A couple of questions. How cold was it when you first set the net? How thick was the ice right there? How did you pick the spot out there? Coordinates?, Shore triangulation? Thanks, Bob

fresh water Burbot , we call them Lawyers here very good eating .
i have an uncle who fishes under the ice in a very similar way , they tend to have much smother ice so they join a bunch of 1x2 together and get longer distance between the holes if they have smooth and clear ice they have a Jigger a floating sled with a line and a camd claw and it claws its way along under the ice then when they get it where they want they cut the second hole for it
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Bob It was about +5 f when I set the net. We set as soon as the ice freezes over, usually about 3 " thick sometimes less. Easier setting. The spot is convenient right in front of my house, and we set straight out from the bank, across the current of course, and not too far into the main channel. My net is 35 mesh deep so I need about 15 ft of water under the net. No floats on the net or it will freeze in.

Pete. I saw those on Youtube and dont think they wont work on the Yukon river, We have such strong current it would be taken down stream for sure, and not work on the broken ice.Looks like it works good on a lake with smooth clear water and ice though.

Interesting and thank you again for that demonstration. Great! When you were asked how to string it through the first time it got me thinking of how I would attempt to do it. That was my first thought was many holes close enough to gather to get it strung out. It makes a lot of sense.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

What an adventurist life, great video Yukon! I would bet that I'm not the only one who envies you!!
Thanks .Although its nice to walk out your door and be hunting , trapping and fishing. And the freedom is great. There are also many downsides as well. Everything has to fly in and out including the people. Its around $800 round trip to anchorage to see a doctor or get my license renewed. A gln of gas or diesel is between $6-7 in most villages, more in some villages.$10 for a jar of peanut butter $5 for a loaf of bread. Not much produce at all. No fresh meat or fish at the store, all frozen. The meat and fish harvested local are the only fresh meat people have access to.
No restaurants, movies or bowling or bars,. No alcohol to buy. Its even illegal.
intermittent water and sewer, many don't have either.
There are many reasons no one moves here. One being no available housing. Not many jobs. But if you get past all that and ambitious ,you can do real good for yourself here if you work hard and have a little luck.

That is a consideration around those holes. But the ice is so thick you would have a hard time going under maybe. lol
