I still have about 3 boxes of strike anywhere wood matches. Someone was telling me that you can't buy them anymore, I haven't looked yet but will. My question is the wood matches you have to have, the box for striking them to light, will they light by butting up the ends and twisting them together to cause friction? I was told that is the only other way they will light. Anyone have some of those matches, will that work to light them with out the box?

^ ya, they suck bad. That is why I thought if anyone had them if they would try to light them by twisting end to ignite them and see if it works. I looked and you still can buy strike anywhere matches from Amazon like you said. Thanks

I've heard the shipping companies are the cause of the strike anywheres getting hard to find, they consider them hazardous bc the white tip is white phosphorus. White phosphorous match production was outlawed in 1913. What is used now is phosphorus sesquisulfide and potassium chlorate.

I know they are still available cause I just bought a box at RuralKing. Not the kind Paul is talking about.
Them strike on box are a pain. However I knew a guy that had a pocket full of strike anywhere matches one 4th july for lighting firecrackers. They rubbed in his pocket and all lit up. He dropped his pants in public and still had a burn in a bad spot.

Strike anywhere matches will light when struck on anything.....your zipper or front teeth. I use them for frying fish. Throw one in the oil and when it lights the oil is hot enough. We had mice get into a box of them when I worked in Idaho and were told the mice must have chewed on them. Anyway, it burned the cabin down.

160user >>> I keep all my matches in a tin box that has a latch if knocked to floor it won't open. I heard a lot of bad story's about that same thing. I just wonder if the box only strike matches, if they can be light with striking them or twisting them together. I was hoping someone had some and would try. LOL

snowy, The strike on box matches will not light if you rub the heads together. In my experience they don't always light when struck on the box. The new green headed ones are worse than the old red headed ones. Charlie

Ya, that is what I thought. Someone told me they will light every time by holding one in each thumb and pointer finger and twist the ends together. I just tried the green strike anywhere and when you twist them they light right now.

I have heard you can tape a bunch together and make a heck of a bomb. Even better if you put those match heads in a piece of pipe with caps on both ends. Fuzing and ignition is only limited by one's imagination.

^^^ LOL >>> that reminded me a guy I know we bought one of those water guns that will rotate to water his grass. He built a stand 5 feet high and such. When he fired it up and started shoot water out it broke every window in his house on the south side. LOL He has an old house with single pane glass windows. His wife wasn't happy with him. LOL When he told me the story I was on the ground laughing.

Strike anywhere's are still available here but they aren't built as good as they were. Usually takes a couple to get one to ignite.

I'm a pipe smoker. You're supposed to use matches to light your pipe but I haven't been able to locate a quality match for a long time... I even tried the fancy sulfur free ones they market to cigar smokers that don't change the flavor of your stogie...
Most of the matches in the box are garbage... They flare up and instantly go out.
I keep a few boxes around. But I basically gave up and went to cheap disposable butane lighters.

Marty >>> sometime try taking two of those matches you have, and try to ignite them by twisting them together? See if you can get fire without the box striking pad. The strike pads are waterproof also and come just as a pad that you can put in a waterproof match case. That's all I need as far as matches.

Yep, I got some of those. They seem to not to light very good when striking anywhere. The box striking pad wears out and then it is harder to get them started. I did find out if you don't have the box and are hard to start anywhere else they start very well striking them together to get a friction and create some heat and they start really good. Just something if you are in a pinch. Would really like to try the other kind to see what happens with them using the same method.

A common problem back when, that's why they turned to "Safety Matches". I buy the anywhere's whenever I can find them, and keep them and the Box only's in a small p-nut butter jar hanging on the wall at the cabin, just so mice can't get at them.
