We've had this beauty living in our neck of the woods for a few years. Finally caught her just about to cross the road into a corn field for a good close up! Glad she's looking healthy. [Linked Image]

Darn near invisible now, but in summer she's got to stick out like a sore thumb!

Saw two 14 years ago south of Hannibal. Doe and fawn. The doe played the I will lay flat and hide trick. That did not work too well in October. She finally lost her nerve and ran.

Beauty is in the eye......... However, this is a genetic deviation that should not be allowed to continue. When this gene is carried on to the next generations,(following the idea of ontogeny recapitulating phylogeny) it allows even more of the 'misfits' to carry on this trait, (and who knows what others) thereby setting them up as easy prey, and other problems. I do understand that many people enjoy seeing the white deer, but they are using emotion instead of scientific based information. There have been way too many laws and administrative rules that are based on emotion and overlooked scientific principles. Just look through your own laws, as I am sure you will find examples.

I have always been told true albinos cannot procreate. Is that wrong?

Albinos can reproduce, but most of the time they reproduce with a normal color deer and the recessive gean goes dormant until for what ever reason it pops up down the family tree.
As stated above, laws made on emotions not facts
Seems to be the way things are do, very unfortunate

Albinos are illegal to shoot in Wisconsin. However, pibalds are fair game. Every year there is a rumor that she was poached but she always seems to pull through. She’s been living in a few hundred acres owned by a warden lieutenant so I think it helps her odds of survival. In the fall she sticks out like a sore thumb when she’s out feeding in a cut corn field it’s pretty cool to see. In the fall I saw her a lot with what appeared to be a yearling fawn which was normal colored so I’m not sure if it belonged to her or not.

Sure hope the family down the road doesn't read this....their "misfit" daughter might get a complex.....

Albinism in white-tailed deer is exceedingly rare. It is hereditary, but since the gene which causes it is recessive, it can not spread like a wildfire through the gene pool.
The only physical disadvantage other than not being able to hide from predators for most of the year, is somewhat diminished eyesight from lack of pigment in the iris. This is not necessarily detrimental to their survival, and certainly is no reason to wipe them off the planet.
