So here I am at the end of my 3rd season in a row with out being able to get a bobcat in a cubby set I have had 3 out since December with nothing but refusals tried 3 baits chicken beaver and goat but no dice
I probably shouldn’t complain I’ve got them in every other style of set but this has turned into a man versus the mountain kinda thing for me any advice would be appreciated

Do you have any picture of the cubbies you are using? Maybe they are too blocked in where the bobcat feels confined? I think a walk through style cubby would pose less refusals

Yes a walk through cubby is very effective. My experience has been if an animal can see its way out the back end of a space, and can easily turn around within it, they are far less hesitant to enter. Also snares in tight spots around a cubby are very successful.

The cubby looks good..Where is your bait located in the cubby? Visual eye appeal, as in bait or feathers helps to keep the cat intrigued to walk into the cubby. Not sure of your regulations but if you could have the bait wired to the big tree on the left in the inside of your cubby at the cats eye level.

Your cubby looks a bit blocked with twigs at the back end hindering a clean walk through. I would also hang your bait/attraction, with lure on it, in the center of the cubby so the animal views it like looking through a scope. [Linked Image]

Is chicken their natural food? IMO a good lure on a stick or bird wing will work much better. The lure is a curiosity and you know what killed the cat?

Do you have big snows???
If not
A walk thru is your friend same system you are using more or less but no roof.
Cubbies get to many refusals imo when I quit using them my catch went up 35 to 40%
Have not used one in 25 years or so

We don’t get much snow here and we can’t have exposed bait within 15’ of a foot hold

I’m with Red.

I get way more refusals at cubby’s than any other set. And yes, even open ended cubbies with eye appeal.

I do still use a few, but theyre kind of specialty sets in specialty situations (mainly snow and no natural weather proof locations).

Like Red and Boone,I've used a couple and even caught with them but consider them high labor and low percentage.Any time you ask an animal to jump through hoops, you are lowering you odds.Back in the day, cubbies were used to shelter traps,up North.I'm not sure how well that really worked but most trappers today put the trap outside for the peekers. So now,the cubby doesn't shelter at all.The same could be accomplished with lure or attractor on the side of a tree and the trap in the appropriate spot and guiding to create a walk through. With a trap outside the cubby, negates the need for that construction work. You don't need a hanging bait to catch a bobcat.

If you have existing cubbies but cats are walking by,let them, but have something waiting for them.Set a trap or two where they walk and block it as a walk through. Now you aren't asking him to jump through any hoops but are letting him go where he already wants to.

Even when I used natural cubbies,I always backed them up with snares and other sets.
