My copy of the NRA magazine American Hunter arrived today . On the cover is True Tales of American Mountain Men .Pictured is a trapper in buckskins holding a trap in one hand and some beaver pelts in the other hand . The Fur Trade Industry was a major factor in the early history of the North American continent .It is a part of the heritage of our country .That alone is reason enough to be proud to say we are trappers

I was thinking the same thing when I saw it.

Sharon I was looking at it more from a factual point of view. But it is a beautiful painting .And you as an artist would be looking with your eyes trained on the details of the art work .Thanks for helping me to see what you see . It is a painting titled "Rocky Mountain Trapper "by David Wright

How neat what that be to have a 24" X 36" framed copy of that painting hanging in the fur shop or your den?

I would say yes. All I can see is the chain and one of the longsprings, though!

I remember an old Remington poster for their Nylon 66 in a sporting goods store.
Had a trapper in buckskins in a birch bark canoe going down a river. The shot was looking at the front of the canoe, but you could see the boulders in the river to each side.
He had a trap basket in front of him and you could make out a broken paddle just behind him. He was using the stock of the Nylon 66 for a paddle.
I REALLY wanted one of those rifles. Finally got one in 1976 and still have it today.
Even though it was not period correct, I wish I had that old poster!!

ShawneeMan that is so cool. As a kid in the 60's I saw an add from Remington also in an old Fur Fish Game with a green wool coated trapper bending down to check some water set in the creek with a pack basket on his back and a Remington Nylon 66 .22 semi auto in his hand. I promise you I didn't rest until I got one later as a teenager; at the time I thought you had to have one of those to be a real trapper! grin

I enjoy the history very much of time, and the art just brings out the dimensions to living colour. They both are dovetailed in appreciation....

I do tend to be lost in the details of the artist's right side of the brain smile

I don't get the magazine so I haven't seen it.

Is this the one with the trapper holding a PA longrifle over his shoulders and wearing a hood-like cap with faux ears?

One of the amazing things about those men is what they where able to carry was all they owned . And another fact about them is some where called Free Trappers and others where Company Trappers . The Free Trappers could do business with any fur buyer and any store .The Company Trappers where forced to only do business with the Company they worked for .The mark up on the goods that those trappers needed was so high that it was almost impossible to go from a Company Trapper to a Free Trapper. And they had their own form of monetary system . They got paid in Tokens that was based loosely on the value of beaver pelts .In those days they called them pews

Thanks for posting a photo of it. I believe they used this same print for a cover of Backwoodsman magazine a couple years ago. I remember being impressed with the trap chain. It looks like it was handmade by a blacksmith and is super heavy duty. It makes perfect sense, of course. I guess I hadn't thought about such a detail before so it really struck me when I saw it in his painting.

That hat he's wearing is similar to one in sketches by Kurz and A.J. Miller of frontiersmen and Natives of the 19th century.

Looks like a great issue. I'll have to see if someone around here has a copy I can borrow.

Andrew
