I am about to start making some cage traps, and was wondering if j hooks or hog rings are better. Also, what size is best because I don't want to get the wrong size and the clips not fit. Thanks

Not sure why your considering J-hooks?? just never heard that. What little I've done mostly fix what cages I've purchased from others, I've used hog rings. They also make a little metal clip just for connecting wire. At least I've seen them never used one.

You need 12.5 PIG rings they work the best they make several styles so know what your buying, check out Essential Hardware lower price and free shipping the last time l bought some. Kluberstanz sells them by the pound also they have pointed and blunt the blunts can be a pain when the tips hang up but they don't have the sharp points.

The speed (air gun) rings are too light IMO and as you lose them the holding power is at risk, I got some cages on a trade and had 2 different of the air rings panels fail this year.

Guessing J-hooks = "Rabbit cage clips" many options at Kluberstanz.com they work well on the long seam where the wires meet to form the square after wrapping around the frame. On a 1X2 wire I put a clip in every other opening on the 1X1 row they come in extra long .

Hog rings. I you mean by J hooks the rabbit cage clips... they are horrid for anything other than domestic rodents.

I understand what he Is saying. These cage building devices are called PEN rings and J clips

If your building cage traps out of 16 or 14 gauge wire I would go with the 5/16ths J clips. These will close tighter then the 3/8ths J clips.

I believe if your building them out of heavier wire then your going to have to go with the Pen rigs.
Of coarse what ever your going to use you should buy the correct tool to close them.

Do a Google search. www.klubertanz.com Or call them at 1-800-237-3899 these people have all the gear you may need and will help you out with any questions you may have.

Good luck
