I have a coyote trapping job coming up after season goes out next week. I was wondering if there is a lure or bait that would draw coyotes more than anything else. I know nothing is 100 percent possums are going to find it. Thanks

No it's less than 8 miles from the house and I didn't do a set up fee either. This will be the first time I'm sure I will learn a lot this time.

I used to charge a set up fee that would cover the cost of the traps if they were stolen

I now make a lot of my own bait using ground beaver, eggs and Dobbins bait solution and I buy just a little. I am a firm believer that on the right location with an appealing set you could take a piece of a corn dog and catch a coyote if he was hungry. That said there are two baits I always have...Andy Weiser's Horse Meat Predator Bait and Clete's Apple Road. They just produce and I get a ton of digging with these baits well after I pull them in March. But there are so many good commercial baits on the market it's hard to screw up. Lesel's stuff (mentioned above) is excellent as well as Caven's. I don't know about "pulling them in" but for a good mild warmer weather bait Mark June's Widowmaker murders coyotes. it is not strong at all to my nose but they can smell it just fine. I tend to swap up lures from year to year but I always have some GH2. If there is anything that will pull them in it's Fox Hollow GH2..but it is strong for going into March in Alabama. I would use sparingly. Everybody is going to have different answers on this and none of them are wrong.

Yes there is a lure that does not attract non target as much but will catch fox and cats . As far as coyote specific lure only they do not make it.
Pan tension will help with that but you know that already being a payed predator control guy.
In your case instruction would be to your benifit.
But a trail set works very well.

Sorry...I did misunderstand. I would think in general maybe something fresh and not tainted might not draw in as many non-targets. But it may or may not be as effective on coyotes either. I have found that the more out in the open I am the fewer possums I catch (like on big roads or young clear cuts). Once I get into big timber I catch way more possums (and coons for that matter). But that might be just my experience and not universally true.

I don't know if you can use snares but snares can be set to avoid all possums, skunks and most coons and catch any coyote that comes along. They can be used as backup to trap sets in case of non target catches in the traps.

Stay a little farther off the roads and if you are in the fields work the washes where the dirt settles in the low spots. Usually won't have much nontarget that way, just k-9 and cats. I'd also consider charging a incidental catch fee as you can't stop other critters from clogging up your sets.

Set at least 4 or 5 sets per location. Use the remakes of nontargets to your advantage. Don't use bait, use small amouts of lure. Get some quality urine and use it on scent posts. Set right on location.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

You Betcha!

I’m right in line with TrapperG’s thinking.

To help prevent non-target catches, I would avoid using baited sets and food based lures.

I would stick with flat & post sets using urine, poop, and a very small amount of gland lure.

Blind trail sets are also a great option if you can read sign well, and are adept at trap placement.

Flat & post sets are much less likely to be tampered with by coons than a baited set.

This keeps your line running, and prevents you from having to step back in the set area to repair a coon’s mayhem.

Avoiding the use of loud lures will also help cut back on the trash.

Best of Luck TJ!
