My first thought as well.

I see that this happened in April/May of 2016. I tried to do a little digging around the 'net' to see what the outcome of the perp's trial might have been. Couldn't find anything.
Nor did I see anything else about the young man that took care of 'business'. Other than the burglar was charged & his bond was $250,000. Maybe someone out there has
a better or more current source than what I found.

Seems like a good kid, very soft spoken and gentle-seeming. Just don't break into his house! Good for him for doing the right thing, and good for his step-father for teaching him how to do it.

Agreed If he has been taught gun safety and proper usage at 11 he can handle at least a situation such as this one. You don't suddenly get educated because you reach a certain age

Times change... peoples views change. When we were kids my Dads firearms were in the Family room Unlocked in a glass front gun case. Because we were Taught two things we Didnt bother the firearms.

1. Dad and Mom said " Dont Touch" and we Had both healthy fear and respect for our Parents.

2. We were taught just what the firearms were for, and what they could do by Seeing them shot and by shooting them.

A kid that is Never disciplined will not Care. A kid that isn't taught will be Curious...one day the Kid and or they and their friends will mess with them because of curiosity and No previous consequences. Those two things are at the Root of many Issues with Firearms today.

We all knew where Dads Ammo was for those Firearms, we Just would Never Have Touched it.

However, if necessary as a kid I would have been able to, and would have defended my home and family.

I totally relate Scott as that was back when parents raised their kids without the government and media indoctrinating our youth on what they decide is inappropriate.

I taught my kids the same way I was taught. My kids have access to guns and ammo and they are taught when and how to use them.

Kids can learn to handle guns at a very early age. Up until recently mine just sat in the closet, and never once had an issue with kids touching them when not allowed. They're allowed to dry-fire and handle whenever I'm helping, but they know not to touch otherwise. They just moved to the attic (the guns, not the kids), because we had problems with the 4 year old climbing up and playing with the knives that sat with the ammo. The kid's got an obsession with sharp things, so the guns, knives, ammo, and lighters/matches all moved to a locked attic.

The Attic isn't the answer.....

Parenting is what happened The stuff needed to move anyway, I'm in the process of refinishing the floors, taking closet doors off (it's a big wide closet-12 feet wide, 3 feet deep), re-arranging stuff, etc. The 4 year old wasn't hurting anything playing with the knives, he was just using my dresser as a ladder and bent the pulls on the drawers. He got a "lesson" that he won't soon forget, and wouldn't climb back up there even if I told him it was okay. He's a funny kid, he's always had a thing for knives. When he was 2, he was constantly taking butter knives from the kitchen. He'd hide them all over so he could handle them later. Found them in his pillow, under the bed, stuffed under couch coushins, all over. He didn't really want to play or cut things, he just says he likes sharp stuff. Anyway, the stuff was in the way, and just kind of strewn about the closet, so it's just easier for me to build a nice gun rack and a couple shelves in the attic and keep everything together and organized that way.

I agree that kids can learn to handle guns at a young age. Both of my sons (11 and 12) know how to handle them, check if they are loaded, load them, shoot them, clean them and most importantly they know gun safety. My sons are both avid turkey hunters. Just last weekend, me and my 12yr old went on a small rabbit hunt, both of us with fully loaded shotguns in hand.
But- it is my responsibility as a father and gun owner to make sure they don't have access to them. They know the rules, they know they are not allowed to touch them without my permission, and I fully trust that they would follow the rules even without my presence. I truly believe that I could leave loaded guns in every room, in plain sight and they would not mess with them, but I won't take that chance.
I know someone who had kids like mine (raised around and taught about guns), and their kid committed suicide with one of the families guns. I don't believe my kids would ever do that, but again, I'm not going to take that chance. Also, my kids have friends over quite often and it is my responsibility to make sure that they don't have access to a gun either.

Thank you. It doesn't come naturally to them yet, at least at that young age, so it takes a lot of practice, but it's one of the things we work on when we handle guns, and I'm religious about it. I even keep my fingers off the trigger of my power tools at work. A free-spinning socket that flies off and hits you on the eye, or a drill bit stuck in your leg, are almost as bad as a negligent discharge I never worried about them having full access to the guns, they were always right out in the open, and I still wouldn't worry about. And you shouldn't feel bad about locking yours up, either, it's a personal parenting choice.

Might be bad parenting, but my boys had their own guns and ammo in their own rooms since they were 10 or so. If they wanted to clean, touch, take ahold of and look, they always asked first and brought me the weapon and stated “Clear” for my approval.
They are 22 and 20 now. Never shot anyone. Never an inadvertent discharge.
I started when they were toddlers on gun safety. I think the thing that stuck with them was when shooting shotguns at some pumpkins I had set up, they didn’t realize I had taped a picture of their mom on the back side. After each shot their target we went to look at the hole it blew through. Seeing a lifesize pic of their moms face that was half blown away left an impression of the dangers associated with a weapon. Seemed to work just fine. One held off on shooting for a while, but the other kept at it. My youngest finally came around and started shooting again.
Like I said, may have been a little over the top, but it got the message across.

I know some people in government who’d like to keep all of us “safe” the same way!

I think i started keeping my guns in my room when I was about 10. I shot a brown bear in the barnyard with my .308 when I was 13 while dad was at work and mom was taking care of the little kids. When I wanted to go hunting (and had my chores and homework done), I just asked my folks if it was ok, loaded up and went. If I wanted to hunt dawn, I told them the night before. I think I was looking for moose by myself with that .308 from about age 12, small game long before that. That was the way my dad grew up and he didn’t see any problem with it so he passed it on, and it’s how I plan on my kids growing up too. Parent however you want to, but please don’t deprive your kids of liberty and responsibility in the quest for safety.


Edit: I will, however, teach my kids to only shoot intruders in the front, to avoid legal headaches.

When i was in the 5th or 6th grade me and my partner in crime would ride our bikes to school with our shotguns so we could go hunting after school. Would put them in the corner with the ball bats and balls. The most we ever heard was "those better not be loaded"!

Neighbor kids is the reason I locked my guns up. I never knew who or how many kids would be running around here. My kids all went hunting with me at a very young age. They knew without any doubts what death was by the time they were kindergarteners. Some of their friends didn't. Lost count of how many people were shocked that I let a two year old watch me butcher deer or dress squirrels or any other meat we were making. They knew exactly what tool would turn something alive into meat also. "Protecting" your kids from the real world is not a good idea IMO.

In order to protect himself, family and property just like his parent taught him.
