Good evening I am in the southeast Georgia to be exact. Trapping season is closed here now but I am still trapping beavers on some small water. What is everyone’s thoughts as to what makes a beaver change habits patterns etc. Is it air temp? Water temp? A certain month? A plant of tree blooming or budding? It’s been a little slow dispite the enmormous amount of sign. I went in first with a few 330’s in the water on slides rest have been snares on trails and runs. No lure no bait with the least amount of disturbances as possible since it is such a small body of water. I am just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are as to what triggers a change in behavior. Thanks

It’s hard to say, maybe somebody with more knowledge will chime in. I have no idea why, but I’ve seen beaver do some crazy and unpredictable things. I’ve seen where dams were built, only for the beaver to disappear a couple weeks later. Last summer, I found where a pair had gotten into a lake, and I watched them all summer and into early fall. By the time trapping season rolled around, there was no sign of them. I’ve seen where some cut down trees all year long, and others don’t get serious about cutting until October. I’ve been told that each colony is different. I’m no expert, but that’s my experience.

All animals are driven by the solar lunar tables. As a matter of fact so are women and fish. (Just Sayin). Just like in the colder climates the birds migrate and the deer rut earlier than in the south. In the spring it goes in reverse. Breeding season down here starts earlier than in the north or colder climates if you will.As with anything wild there are no hard fast rules but a good indicator is length of day and lunar table. I'm just getting started trapping but have studied animals and fish my entire life.

Beaver, raccoon and muskrat are animals that you really have to learn what is good sign and what is worthless as all of these can leave tremendous amount of sign and can mislead you as to what is really going on.

If your traps are on location....then patience is what you need. Beavers may already be spooky. Check traps from as far away as you can.
