I went walking around the desert today pretending to be a shed hunter when right in the middle of nothing happening I walked onto a sleeping coyote. At 30 yards it sat up and watched me raise my rabbit gun. Just in time for the fur sale next Saturday. It even looks half decent. Not a November beauty I'm sure but I'll take it.

Since I wasn't able to trap any this year I got excited and cut my hike short, hurried home and got it skinned, washed and fleshed. Letting the fur dry a bit overnight and I'll get you your pic tomorrow. Never been so excited to put up a coyote.

They say let sleeping dogs lie...but in your defense, he did sit up so I guess he wasn't sleeping' no more!

I had a similar encounter several years ago. I was tracking a deer which I arrowed the night before. I was looking at the scant blood on the ground, walking down a draw when I briefly looked up, and low and behold, there was a coyote doing the exact same thing that I was doing only from the opposite direction. We must have picked our heads up at the same time and stared at each other briefly, until he caught a 17HMR right between the eyes. I will never forget the disappointment on his face. It was as though he was thinking, "Oh crap!", except he caught the round before he could spit out the "crap" half of the thought.

This is all you get for now. I'll add another when it's all dry and fancied up.

That's cuz he lives in the banana belt of Idaho. Where they grow potatoes and onions and eat jackrabbit most nights of the week. Want a picture of my yard?
