•District of Columbia – 3 electoral votes
•Connecticut - 7 electoral votes
•Hawaii – 4 electoral votes
•Illinois – 20 electoral votes
•Maryland – 10 electoral votes
•Massachusetts – 11 electoral votes
•New Jersey – 14 electoral votes
•Washington – 12 electoral votes
•Vermont – 3 electoral votes
•California – 55 electoral votes
•Rhode Island – 4 electoral votes
•New York – 29 electoral votes

These are the states that have agreed to it. In order for it to happen there will have to be 98 electoral votes more. What states do you see that happening in? I think its just smoke and mirrors. You really think CA for example will give all their votes to a republican if that's the winner of the popular vote? How about if R's would win the popular vote and not the electoral vote? IF it does happen will the supremes declare it constitutional?

You left out Colorado with 9 votes. So their total is 181, or 89 short of 270.

I used to think the electoral college was obsolete until I realized that without it 4 or 5 states would determine our elections and the rest of our votes would not matter.

Old enough to know better, but dumb enough to still try.

They are trying for sure to do it. But I'm not sure they can short of an amendment?

I'm kind of fuzy on all the details of our electoral. But I'm pretty sure and individual state nor any form of compact can change our electoral?

My warm and fuzzy on the topic is that each state has certain amount of electoral votes that are dictated where they will go by that states "popular" vote. In other words:. To each state their own! Not any one state nor the federal govt an tell any other state where to put them. To do so would mean our entire electoral process would be scraped and replaced on a national level (amendment!).

So! What's it matter if a state such as California tells the nation it's electoral will go to the popular votes? If the popular votes is Democrat (which it is normally)? Then it changes nothing! California is blue already.

Here is where it could hurt the nation if I understand this whole mess correctly? A red state allows Democrats to pull this junk and otherwise electoral votes go blue that would have otherwise went red.

Personally,. I think this will do the Democrats more harm than good. Because!!!!!!!! The Democratic party has went full fledged baby killing, America Hating, old school NAZI! I believe that all of America s old school non communist Democrats who don't wanna kill babies and love America are waking up and switching sides!

So, what I think will most likely happen is:. They will change their blue state law to say their electoral will go to The popular vote. Then the popular vote will swing red because the new NAZI Democrat AKA baby killing party has swung so far left that they have alienated half their party. Lol, so we will get their electoral s. Then they will fully understand our system and wanna change it back to the way it is?

The governor of Colorado hasn't signed it yet. But, they expect him to.

They have changed from giving their votes to the person who wins the popular vote in their state. To the person who wins the national popular vote.

So a republican can win the state but lose the national popular vote. So all of the votes would go to the democrat. Or visa versa.

Electoral College: Preserve or Abolish?

The Current Call for Change

Although groups like the League of Women Voters have long supported the abolition of the electoral college,1 the protracted proceedings in Florida as well as the apparent disparity between the popular and the electoral college vote have further fueled calls to abolish the electoral college. Critics urge a replacement of the electoral college with a straightforward nationwide popular vote system; and if needed, a national run-off between the top two candidates so that the winner will always receive an absolute majority of the popular vote.2 An advocate of this plan, the Center for Voting and Democracy, explains:

[I]t’s time once again to consider replacing the electoral college with direct election. To assure a real majority winner, a much better solution than a simple plurality vote or keeping the electoral college would be to adopt instant runoff voting, a majority vote system.3
Another advocate for the abolition of the electoral college, Citizens for True Democracy, asserts:

• The electoral college is outdated and anti-democratic. America deserves truly representative presidential elections, in which all votes have equivalent values. A constitutional amendment replacing the electoral college with a simple popular vote would be most effective.4

• The electoral college is a disastrous institution. It. . . . is unfair, inaccurate, and unaccountable. Its abolition is the only path to a true American democracy.5
Others have joined this call,6 and, in sympathy with their view, Senator Hillary Clinton has promised to introduce in the Senate a constitutional amendment to abolish the electoral college — a movement already supported by Democrat Senator Dick Durbin and Republican Senators John Warner and Arlen Spector — and an action parallel to that already undertaken in the House of Representatives by Republicans Ray Lahood and Jim Leach and Democrats Robert Wise, Dick Gephardt, Rick Boucher, Virgil Goode, and Robert Underwood. Such an amendment would eliminate several extensive parts of the Constitution, including Article II, Section 1, ¶ 2, 4, and portions of the 12th, the 20th, and the 23rd Amendments.

The current rhetoric calling for an end to the electoral college frequently reveals a misunderstanding of the purpose of the college as well as the safeguards it provides and the interests it protects. Therefore, a brief review of the college is appropriate before any informed discussion about its abolition should proceed.

Yes

Which would only hurt a red state when popular vote goes blue.

If there were no electoral college system Missouri (and other States with a small population) would have no leverage on a National scale.

Personally

I don't think we will make it long enough to find out. Democrats are pushing for impeachment right now as we speak!

Republican senators just sided with Democrats to block Trump's executive order to build wall.

I think we are about to make a big decision as a nation! Give in To tyranny or not?

I'm glad the popular vote isn't valid because Hillary would be the potus. Who knows how much damage she would've done in this 2 years. All a candidate would need to do is focus on the major california Florida and NY cities to win. The rest of the nation wouldn't mean squat.

Clinton got impeached but didn't lose his job or his pension. R's were nonstop talking about impeaching B.O. and that never happened.

If the Electoral College is circumvented, the United States will dissolve. Millions will die.
