If your handy with the snare swivel tool.....you can also wrap your tags on the cable...can Nevah have enough swivels. I use cable and a clasp...instead of wire.

I like that setup a lot Nessy. I learned the hard way about swivels on conibears... You are right you can nevER have enough swivels. The more the bettER. I've been looking for a bettER setup than I currently have on my conibeaRS and may have to use this as a guideline. Thanks.

P.S. - Also note my use of the letter "r" in words that end in it grin

Good idea on the safety latches, those give me fits. As for the swivels...are you setting under the ice? Seems to me a 330 striking a beaver under the ice is going to quickly expel whatever air the critter took down with it, if it doesn't kill it outright. Unless they have something to get leverage on, I can't see a beaver twisting out before it drowns. I don't swivel footholds under the ice and can't say as I remember ever having lost one.

No chopping ice for me....Spring time sets...cross overs, skinny channel runs, stink stick sets, pull outs....where trap may not be fully submerged...but plenty of cable to get to deep water.

I don't blame you. I was out yesterday and the sixteen inch bar on my saw wasn't enough. If I have the energy, I'll try again tomorrow with the twenty-four inch bar.

I loop 3/32" 7x7 cable onto the spring and secure with a grommet. With the remaining free cable end I make another loop and secure with a grommet. So that whole business extends about 8-10" from the spring eye. Then I loop on extensions as needed. I don't use any swivels and very very rarely does a cable even get a kink in it. I've not found a need for swivels in open water beaver trapping.

Last week I almost ran out of ice auger. Don't remember the last time that happened down here on the coast. At this rate I'm gonna run out of season before the ice starts going out. You guys must have a pile of ice!

The snow insulated the ice in spots where it didn't get blown off. We have four feet of snow on the ground. I'm going to try again today.

No Maine folk in my family Nessy... At least none that I'm aware of.

The "Ayuh" is a memory of a cartoon from my childhood. One of the characters was your stereotypical Maine resident.

Looks like you forgot one wind of the wire.
