Do many of you skin beaver that way sometimes?

Never, and may I ask why you would?

I did a couple small ones like that before,just to try it.Came out like a big rat.

Well, I guess I kind of want to try it out. Something different, and I thought it might look cool for a change. Plus I kind of want to see if it is harder or easier.

I've heard of people doing it in the field.

I was short on time and sold numerous carcass beavers to Groeny this year. But they told me they won't buy carcass animals in my area anymore. So I'm studying up on beaver skinning.
I suppose he wouldn't prefer case skinned beavers either, I guess I should've asked him for more clarity.

For most of us we could probably skin 2 beaver the conventional way by time one was skinned cased.

Don't skin them cased for the market,unless you case them out from a centerline cut from the tail to the middle of the belly only.Then you can finish the cut after beaming and you can board it normally.It is much more difficult to case skin a beaver than the conventional clean skinning method.

I skin all my beaver cased as my buyer request I do so along with leaving the top side of the tail attached. He has a market for it done that way and he pays better than the local buyers will pay so why not?

I once saw a picture of 1 case tanned, with the tail like that, Scout. It looked neat.

Case skinning a beaver is different than a case skinned muskrat . After removing the feet and tail...the first cut is about 1/3 up the belly....start peeling this area leaving the leg holes intact. Once past the back legs , wrap a choker around the back hips and case skin the rest. The hide then goes on the fleshing beam cased. When done scraping , finish the center cut …. I'm not going to say its better or faster, but in this part of the country it's commonplace.

Tried it once to see if they would flesh on the beam easier. Any time saved on fleshing is lost in more time skinning.

l'll try to ask Groenewold what he prefers. He said he'd gladly do the fleshing and stretching if a person doesn't have time for all that all the time. He just won't buy on the carcass any more in my area. I like to know all my options.

If your going to skin your beaver and sell them green your going to get about $6.00 to $8.00 for an average sized beaver. With these beaver prices your better off selling green. Or call NAFA they will put up your beaver for you but then your committed to selling them through the auction I believe FHA will also put up your fur at a cost. I use to work for NAFA but I'm not sure what they charge know. I think we use to charge $5.00 to scrape and board. So at those prices you would be better off selling green.

If done properly, Groenewald doesn't care since the end result is the same. I've sold plenty to them....They will look to see if the leg holes are there.

Most of the seasoned trappers in this area worked for the same fur buyer in the 70's and were trained by him. It's not difficult at all.

Case skinning isn't at all difficult It's just a lot slower then doing It the conventional way.

I used to hunt with a guide in Trurro Nova Scotia named Bill Meekins. He got me into trapping and he case skinned his beavers. He also used a cone shaped horizontal fleshing beam that rotated 360 degrees. As he fleshed an area he spun the beam to expose unfleshed area of hide. After fleshing he cut up the middle of the beaver then board it.

Can you do one In less then 7 min?

I've never timed myself...but 7 minutes seems reasonable...Our season ended Friday, so I won't know till next year
