Big implement dealer stole my mechanic that I stole from them 3 years ago.lol He was free to work 300 hours a month or 100 hours up to him, company truck, 10 days payed for holidays, health insurance, 320 acres of prime hunting ground with a couple nice deer blinds (deer, pheasant, quail, turkey), 1 beef a year, free to leave at any time for kids stuff (ballgames, programs, ect…), use of anything on the farm (loaders, trucks, shop, tire machine, welders, ect..), and a $5000 dollar bonus, bonus is dependent on how hard you work. He liked it here, but was offered about $10 more an hour. My question is, as an employee are things like the hunting, use of equipment, and free time for kids not worth anything? They would be to me but maybe not to most people. Just wondering as I start looking for a new guy. Thanks

I guess for some it just comes down to the yearly salary. I tend to look at the big picture. (The perks)

But I just did the math on 40 hours that hourly increase is $20,800 a year.

Would be for me. Main reason the left previous job. Never knew what my schedule was going to be. Often worked all 3 shifts in the same week. Now, monday through friday, 6am to 2:30 pm. No nights, no weekends, no holidays. I like working for a school district. I've even grown to like some of them little ankle biters.

I took a $6 an hour pay cut to get out the big city and be closer to home. It was about a 30% decrease. Would never go back.

If he were going to work similar hours for the implement that he does for you then an extra 20-35K per year is attractive as it not only significantly increases his current earnings but SS and savings etc. for retirement. Also all those extras don't have the same value to everyone and some may not be of any real value if they are not something they need or want. He may be getting more time for other activities, if hours are less. If you did not make a counter offer then you probably feel that he was getting all that he deserved and maybe even more. The other firm must see his value as more.

Sorry you lost your mechanic. good one is hard to find. Cant really blame a man for wanting to make more money. Especially a man with kids. 10 an hour is a pretty good raise. Did he give you a chance to match it?

I started my own business one year ago now. It was mainly because I wanted the perks, such as a flexible schedule for kids, now I can raise my own animals as I make time for it in the morning. Be able to fit the hunting and trapping into the schedule is also big. I had a great retirement before and very good pay that was steady.

Most now day's look at the total take home pay any more, regardless of what extras are given to entice them to work harder or just stay around.

About the only ones who don't are those older who have most everything they need and only need time away to use the enticements, which is more of a rest period than a gift. They don't need the extra dollars and like thinking they have a semi private honey hole to use.

Bonus's are always nice, but I've only ever worked two places that have given them in my 47 years of steel work, and they were not consistent with any thing but the owners mind set. Regardless of work ethic shown, I'd love all them perks my self would free up a lot of my working wage's, guess some don't think it that way !

Very hard to pass up the old currency now day's for enticements if you have a family with kids doing all matter of things !

Some people can't wrap their head around the concept of value or worth unless they can assign a numerical (dollar) value to it.
As far as I am concerned, assigning such a number to my productivity just makes it easier for a government entity to determine how much they are entitled to steal from me.

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good. O Lord please don't let me be misunderstood.

Nelly a persons worth or value is difficult for people to lay on the table to feed them, or to keep a home over their head, most of us never do get paid what we are worth and have to settle for what we can live on or get by with.

My perks at work relate to having some time to eat lunch, some where besides an open field to relieve my self and maybe a fire for heat once in a while LOL

My best guess is he will be back. Might take a little while but some folks don't realize the value of workplace culture and percs till they are gone.

Wish him good luck and don't be to upset with him.

He has to do what he feels is right for him. I doubt it's personal.

All those extras you have available for an employee would be really valuable and helpful to me if I was looking for a job. Especially the $5000 bonus each year!
But, $20,000 raise a year would most likely pay for everything I would receive from you as benefits. $20,000USD is huge!

That’s what I’ve been telling my dad and brother. Small schools for the kids and county living mean a lot to some guys.

Thanks danny. I could only offer $2 more an hour. With commodity prices so low it’s tuff. I told him if I could pay him more I would have already have been doing it.

racerboy dead on. I consider him a friend and I told him exactly that. Do what you think is best for your family.

Jurassic, thanks. We try and treat employees as family. Dads rule is never tell a employee to do something you won’t
