I am sitting in about the best possible spot in Nebraska right now. But I know a couple guys on these trapping forums just east of me 40 miles in Iowa that have lost pretty much everything.

Terrible deal!

It sure is odd that it took so long to hit the nationwide news. I was talking to some houndsman friends in Utah yesterday, and they hadn't heard anything about it. .

One mile from me the Federal levee protecting Omaha NE and Council Bluffs IA has 3' of freeboard before we get flooded. It is higher now than it was in 2011 when the Corp of Engineers decided to hold too much water up in SD even though there was record snow in Montana. Well we are there now and the mountains are holding 30 plus inches of WATER in the snow pack. SD still has 4' of snow in places to boot. I say we will have this issue all summer. I-29 is closed to our North as well as to the South of us. It was flooded east of us but those rivers are getting back in their banks. Going to be a lot of road construction and rebuilding levees that were toppled all summer long if they can get to them. It is starting to rain as I look out my window. Ugh! LLL

Green Bay area has seen flooding as well - about six blocks from my house the East River flooded last Thursday. I went for a walk yesterday and counted 25 homes that are condemned. Lots of people lost everything.

Hang tough people.

^ It really is interesting how the national news very seldom reports on the mid/grain belt or upper plains west states. All you hear is eastern southern or west ocean states when things like this happen. A lot of disaster happens in these states and not a word. lol Well, we like it that way anyway.

A big nasty blizzard rolls through the heartland, we call it a Tuesday.

Once it crosses the ohio river, it magically becomes THE STORM OF THE CENTURY

I haven't heard one report of looting yet.

Sorry to hear of all the flooding and people loss.

I don't watch news anymore as trapperman is more reliable.

All I can say is prepare for more as we have lots of snow to melt up here which will be coming your way. Hopefully the rest will melt off slow.

Lots of cattle lost and calving season was going on also, the loss of livestock will be massive in places seen photos where they were digging out cattle stuck and buried in snowbanks! Not good

The one amazing bright side to this is the outpouring of support from everyone. I've seen via Facebook loads of hay coming into the affected area, truck loads of water, food, clothing, tools, etc... One guy drove up from Houston with a pickup load of supplies. I think the Cajun Navy is here from Louisiana, I saw some guys from Florida were here with a special amphibious vehicle. Just pretty neat to see those things happen, especially when you see all the bad crap happening in this country everyday.

I feel for all those folks.

In '93 We had the same thing going on here. I was a fireman at the time and we were about worked to death trying to keep up. Sand bagged miles of the Mississippi river. The corps kept us updated as to where the weak spots were. Three in particular were not expected to hold, and nearly didn't. if any of those spots would have given out there would have been 10's of thousands of people lose their homes. Someone, blew a portion of levy just north of us on the Missouri side. That, as bad as it was for the folks on the west side, may have saved us. Then weeks later they were set to blow a portion of the levy 80 miles south to relieve the pressure. That would have wiped far less people and land, but still an awful lot. Just before they blew it the river dropped an inch or so.

1993 we fought to keep the water IN the river. 1995 It rained here for weeks on end and we were worked even harder trying to get the water into the river. The actual local flooding in 95 was worst than in 93. However the potential of truly epic flooding was less.

I told some of my kin a few weeks ago to get ready to get out quick. When all that gets here this year, I really doubt the levies will hold. I heard a fella with the Corps. say yesterday, it is only a matter of time as to when these give way. And No one knows when that will be. You simply can not put ten gallons of water in a five gallon bucket and expect it hold it all. All the levies and gates in the world aren't going to hold long.

The pain of this one will be felt for a long time, lots of casualties that no one will even hear about. Even though we didn’t get flooded here in Lincoln our water fields did and we are on water restrictions because there is only one well left, many business that need water to operate are shutting down

Disaster sticks in peoples mind. My mom and dad was always talking about the terrible tornado in 1925. Then the drought in 1936 and to add injury to insult what didn't dry up in the drought washed away in the flood of 1937.
Must have been nice living in the good old days when they didn't have all that climate change.
