I commend this guy's intentions, but it would be more beneficial to the deer to cut down some trees to give them what they normally eat this time of year.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Doesn't feeding deer in winter cause that CWD disease to spread?

^ No >>> Nothing has ever shown that feeding deer causes CWD. I was told that be a warden also.
What causes chronic wasting disease?

Chronic wasting disease is caused by a misfolded protein called a prion. All mammals produce normal prions that are used by cells, then degraded and eliminated, or recycled, within the body. When disease-associated prions contact normal prions, they cause them to refold into their own abnormal shape. These disease-associated prions are not readily broken down and tend to accumulate in--and damage--lymphatic and neural tissues, including the brain.

We would get arrested here for feeding deer. Instead we get to watch them starve. Government regulation at it's finest.

they were gonna cull thousands of healthy deer here in PA to try and prevent the chance of it spreading from a couple.landowners told them to take a hike and now they quit the idea cause no place to do it.

that's what we are told of course deer never congregate around a fallen tree Just a knee jerk reaction to years of pay to hunt "farms" importing sick animals with no regulations Sure they had to be fenced but since when has woven wire stopped a disease

Too many deer for too few food resources in too severe a climate = dead deer.

Nature is trying to cull the herd but misguided folks think that feeding them is the solution.

The problem with Eastern White cedar ,Thuja occidentalis is the high concentrations of Thujone which is a very sever carcinogen that cause abortions to start with in the pregnant deer. Their guts have a biota that need wood cellulose to live on and this gives them the heat in winter and the nutrition, feeding corn etc flushes the system and they can die with an full stomach.

If you cut some populars their twigs would benefit the deer much more.

The first thing that happens is you don't see any fawns the next spring. But with deer feed cedar the aborted causes the deer to die because of complications come May or so.
Deep snow like that causes hair rub off the sides and thermal loose for the deer to decline fast.

my hat is off for gibb and the ones like him helping our wintering deer,if you go into one of our wintering deer yards you will see the effects of a severe winter, deep snow and cold temperature this winter takes a a lot of our deer to winter kill,i have seen this play out since the mid 50s and seems like every 10 years or so we get two severe winters in a row and lose over half of the deer, then they rebuild, they are tough but we gotta help them in these severe winters.when I was young we had small logging operations all around and they all had deer browsing the brush.we don't have that no more, logging operation are all large and mechanized now and they do help but they are not everywhere like it was. mid January is when to start supplementing feeding, alfalfa hay corn, cuttig brush down its all good. you don't feed much in a mild winter, but in one of these severe winters you will help the deer survive. now preditor control is another matter

The DFW here says feeding doesn't cause it but may contribute to the spread. Sick animals inter act with healthy ones.

True story,

Deer are acclimated to woody browse during the winter and the microbes in their digestive tracts are designed to absorb buds and stems of what is growing in their wintering areas.

If they were on corn all winter, their microbes would be acclimated to digest corn,

but it takes time to make the switch over from browse to corn.

Deer have evolved as a species to feed themselves within their wintering range.

man should not interfere.

Salt licks are the worst to spread the saliva transfer between deer with CWD.

I wonder who fed the deer 200 years ago. Surely they'd be extinct without our help.

No offense, but please don't repeat these things because they're not true at all. This is how inaccurate information gets spread all over the world.

Blue tongue is common when the deer gather in the areas with water in the dry years concentrating their numbers and increasing contacts and spreading the problem so social interaction can be harmful in some cases!
