Move to NY. They tax everything we do. Cuomo will tax the air we breathe as soon as he figures out how to meter what we each breathe. Income taxes are high, property taxes are high. My county is 8% sales tax.

No income tax in Tennessee, 24 dollars for my car tags, 9.1 percent most places for sales tax. Some less. Last I checked it was 2.44 per hundred on property tax and if you have 15 acres you can get in green belt and that cuts your land tax by 75%. You can have one house on that 15 acres. I think you would need 15 more for a second house. Roughly a 100 acres of timber land would be $140 per year. City's add on their own city taxes at various rates for property and sales. I sell a lot of land here to people from other states that have been taxed out. Example would be two different people for Illinois and one had a third of an acre and 3 bedroom house roughly 2500 square foot house at $7,000 per year and the other a slight smaller house and 1 acre $7,000 per year. It's pretty cheap but I cannot say much for the weather. Over 70 inches of rain last year and up to about 25 already this year.

It usually doesn't make sense to me to move to a no income tax state in retirement. Generally when in retirement your income is less so a state that raises it's revenue via income tax is a less expensive place to live. Tn makes up for no income tax by charging a 10% sales tax. That is NOT to your advantage. Look at the whole picture - income tax, tax on pensions and social security, sales tax, and property tax. There are websites devoted to this.

Personally I think it's more important to move to a state where the politics match your philosophy.

Try New York for property taxes. My father is almost 80, and has a small ranch home worth around 130K in a small village. His taxes run about 6000.00 a year, before his deductions. That is County, Village, and School combined/

No income tax in Nevada. Just legalize gambling and let the people who gamble cover the tab. Vegas wants a football team but needs to come up with part of the cost, no problem, add a hotel room tax. Haha make the tourist pay for it. Crazy how a 5 mile stretch of rd can generate so much revenue for the state.

Property tax for the 40 acres we just got in Tennessee is 92$ per year. Its that low because it is in the green belt.

I pay a lot of state tax and a lot for property tax in Montana. Highway robbery here on property tax. Not paying tax on SS and retirement plans is a big deal! I would pay a sales tax any day of the week, if we didn't have a state income tax on SS and retirement plans.

Most state taxes are quite low in comparison to even the new lower federal rates, so doing some research to find out what states offer good retirement age persons good places to live etc. may make more sense then looking at one item like state taxes. Other costs of living factors, and availability for close and affordable HC, and social opportunities etc. to me may be more important than paying a few thousand in state taxes. In general as we continue to have wage stagnation and lower rates on investment incomes etc. then the taxes on other items such as sales, gas, real estate etc. will need to go up proportionally if governments are going to get the revenue to provide the services they want to provide.

Below is a link to show which states are the most federally dependent, versus the least. There is some correlation between states that minimize taxes and have others paying federal tax cover those costs for them.

Rather have an increased sales tax, an income tax but a very small property tax bill.

Not in the states but here our income is taxed 20-45%, depending on income, property is taxed annually, everything we buy is taxed 15%, fuel is taxed. I’d guess at least 65% of what we make ends in taxes one way or another. Other then that it’s a great place to live lol

Don't move to Kansas. We are taxed on everything and then some. Income tax, sales tax of 9.75% in JC, property tax, toll roads, you name it. It's mind boggling how this state doesn't have any money.
