I bet those taste good. We had an invasive white bass in a lake in California but they got bigger than that, maybe the same fish.

Anyway, enjoy the work and the meals after.

walleye come in before the white bass here and the walleye haven't started yet. Water temps are only 40 degrees.

Yes I guess the technical name would be white bass. Just always called them sand bass. Most of the one we caught are Male which is smaller then the females. The female are starting to make it up this way. [Linked Image]
These are some of the nicer one we catch, we do get some bigger but thats about the normal size for what we get out of the creeks that go in to eufalua lake. In the last 5 day we have caught a little over 400 fish.

Matt28 thats a great day fishing!!! My absolute favorite fish to catch are white bass. Fight like no other fish and every one feels like the big one. We ought to start catching numbers of them around here in the next few weeks. I fish on the Neosho River for them every year at least one time and always catch a bunch. This is a pic of me and a buddy two years ago after a day on the river. We caught 75 white bass/wipers and 30+ channel cat that day in late March.

What color? Chartreuse? That's what we always had the best luck with.

I’m curious is that mud or growths on those fish? I’ve never really seen that before on fish.

I chase crappie more than I do the whites but those dudes are fun to catch on light tackle. Feels like you have a whale.
Not a big fan of the meat, the reason I chase crappie, but they do make a good fish dip. May have to carry a few twister tail grubs with me when I stop by the fishing hole on the way to town.

Same family; different species:

The white perch (Morone americana)

The white bass, silver bass, or sand bass (Morone chrysops)

Jstaton, if you take every bit of the dark colored meat off of the fillets I find them to be nearly as good as crappies. I think it helps a lot too, to get them on ice asap. I love fishing for them. We have a lake here with shad or a shadle baitfish. In the summer the stripers, that's what we call em here, will push these schools of shad to the surface and it is a feeding frenzy. If you can get to it in time you can limit out pretty quick.

No limit on white bass here. Striper are a diffent fish and have a limit. If you get a lot of the red off they are very good eating. The red meat on the white bass doesn't taste as bad as in catfish to me any way. Still a very fun fish to catch.

It's the same fish, white bass, we just call them stripers here. As far as I know there aren't any real stripers or wipers anywhere near us.

White bass and stripers are different. The state stocks wipers here, which is a hybrid of a striper and a white bass. They are hard fighting, and good eating.

Stripped bass, white bass, white perch, wiper, and yellow bass make up the Temperate Bass family. All similar but different species. You can see pictures and descriptions here; http://outdoornebraska.gov/fishidtemperatebass/

Heard of a saugeye but never heard a hybrid stripper called a wiper? I'll have to use that.

They're running already ?! Thought that cold snap we had wouldve backed that off a bit.

I was just as surprised as you when Matt posted about the run... I was always told that they ran about the same time the Dogwoods bloom. And I haven't noticed that yet. But I haven't been paying attention either.
