Hey guys , we all know the sets. Hopefully you are using all of them on your line. I’m just wondering if there is a popular set that you have had limited success, or even no luck at all with. I’m thinking dirthole, flat set, urine post,
hay set, blind set, or any others I may have left off. Pipe dream now comes to mind. Anyway I have a very tough
time getting a coyote , or fox, or bobcat in a urine post set. Maybe it’s trap placement, l think I’m on location
because a nearby flat set or a dirthole will hold fur. I believe I am setting too close to the post, just want some other opinions and stories of your success or even your failures.
Thanks

Urine posts are a bit of a fail for me as well. Then again, several studies have shown that most animals do not remark a urine post.

Have you tried just a post next to a "food" dirt hole, no urine?

As a fur trapper, I used to feel that way, but have gotten very fond of them in the last few years. Time of year has some to do with it, but like Hobbie eluded to, when coupled with a draw of maybe a carcass, the correct location, or other sets, it has turned into an important tool on my line. The last of the season this year, found me finishing up down in southern Ks catching yotes. While dirtholes this year where a big flop, sets like walk throughs and toy set really shined early. Late in the season, these sets were a flop, but would attract yotes, but not seem to catch, but the exact oppisite on the post sets! I normally set at least two sets, sometimes three, but the post would have the yote in it most of the time, with a second, it's mate in one of the others. Hope this helps you in some way!

I think the issue here is that we dont the the population of coyotes. Seems like the guys that are catching more coyotes with them seem to be going through high population periods.

pipe dream set, and hay set dont work for me. Im trying the tbone sets again. Ive caught one coyote on the tbone so far but i have high hopes for it in hot weather. Ive been fairly successful with post sets. They are actually my go to flat set. However i dont use urine, just some gland lures that do have urine in them.

Pocket set, for coons. Tried several this year, didn't manage to catch a single one. I think it's my trap placement, because I had several with stolen bait and a couple with the trap pushed out of the way, unfired. I'm putting the trap (Duke 1.5) right in front of the hole, so I don't know what to do differently. I tried a PVC pipe set this year, and rocked it, and decided I like it better than digging a hole in the side of the bank. It's way quicker for me to just shove in the pipe.

Sometime I'll have to make a pocket and take a pic so I can have all the guys who know what they're doing critique it.

I haven’t been able to master catching anything with traps sitting in the fur shed or the back of the truck.

If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

Lee what is the toy set you speak of?

The sets that have been bad for me are the ones people mess with. I haven't set snares since my first season. My first snaring season is a story for another time and place.
