I chase crappie more than I do the whites but those dudes are fun to catch on light tackle. Feels like you have a whale.
Not a big fan of the meat, the reason I chase crappie, but they do make a good fish dip. May have to carry a few twister tail grubs with me when I stop by the fishing hole on the way to town.

Same family; different species:

The white perch (Morone americana)

The white bass, silver bass, or sand bass (Morone chrysops)

Never argue with a fool - they will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Jstaton, if you take every bit of the dark colored meat off of the fillets I find them to be nearly as good as crappies. I think it helps a lot too, to get them on ice asap. I love fishing for them. We have a lake here with shad or a shadle baitfish. In the summer the stripers, that's what we call em here, will push these schools of shad to the surface and it is a feeding frenzy. If you can get to it in time you can limit out pretty quick.

No limit on white bass here. Striper are a diffent fish and have a limit. If you get a lot of the red off they are very good eating. The red meat on the white bass doesn't taste as bad as in catfish to me any way. Still a very fun fish to catch.

It's the same fish, white bass, we just call them stripers here. As far as I know there aren't any real stripers or wipers anywhere near us.

White bass and stripers are different. The state stocks wipers here, which is a hybrid of a striper and a white bass. They are hard fighting, and good eating.

Stripped bass, white bass, white perch, wiper, and yellow bass make up the Temperate Bass family. All similar but different species. You can see pictures and descriptions here; http://outdoornebraska.gov/fishidtemperatebass/

Heard of a saugeye but never heard a hybrid stripper called a wiper? I'll have to use that.

They're running already ?! Thought that cold snap we had wouldve backed that off a bit.

I was just as surprised as you when Matt posted about the run... I was always told that they ran about the same time the Dogwoods bloom. And I haven't noticed that yet. But I haven't been paying attention either.
