Yesterday, I paid $4.09 a bushel for 106.43 bushels of shell corn, which is 5960 pounds and cost $435.00. They let me keep the 29 cents. I really like our Co-Op. They are close, just over 2 miles and nice people. I just pull up with my truck and gravity bed and they weigh me and tell me what dump to go to. They load me up quick, weigh me again and I pay and am back home in a few minutes.

Depending on the time of year and what I am feeding, 100 bushels of corn lasts 3 1/2 to 5 weeks.

I feed bagged feed and hay too.

The market is rising considerably as there is now concern that the 2019 crop will be smaller than anticipated. Here in WI data shows that for every day past mid-May we lose about .75 to 1 bushel per acre per day. We have about 3 million acres of corn for grain so we are already estimated to be off 40-60 million bushels on most of our acres. Beans don't drop so much but later planted beans have many fewer flowers then they start to flower about 11 days after the summer solstice. With Iowa alone with 14 million acres of corn I don't know how much they lose per day and at what point that would be but it may not be as much as their growing window is longer.
The preseason estimate was for a 14-15 billion bushel corn crop which was keeping the markets in the mid $3.00 range in the Mid West. Now it will be speculating as to how much smaller the crop may be.
Farmers in general don't benefit from weather related market rises because in most cases yield loss more than eats up the higher prices.
The administration has authorized a huge farmer relief package which we will see how it deployed and when.

I have heard planters running all last night and all day here so far. There's a constant low rumble from 3 directions. The field across the street from me, has not yet been touched.

We are seeing spotty planting. We will have lots of fields that will get planted two maybe three times this spring or summer. Much of the better alfalfa that held up well this winter is scheduled to be cut the first full week of June. A lot of things will be happening on farms around here when all of that merges together.

Delayed planting is now figuring into the market considerably. We will now need to wait to see what the July crop report indicates about acreage planted. That will be the first real rough estimate of 2019 crop size. Politics will also impact prices considerably if our dollar stays as strong as it is now and the tariff stuff is not resolved a smaller crop may meet a smaller demand. In any case the market will most likely roller coast a few times as the speculators respond to news, conditions and reports etc. In our area due to weather issues we have very high forage and hay prices, bedding prices and now soybean (protein) and corn are rising which will eat up the increased milk prices as feed costs are 55% of making milk. For those following the markets you can see the inverse relationship between corn and beans and beef and pork. As feed cost rise the price buyers pay for feeder steers and pigs drops as they need to make a profit along with the lack of markets being iffy.

I agree with the high feed and bedding costs being pretty ridiculous.

Dairy quality dry hay here 2nd and 3rd cutting is up to $300 per ton. Average 1st cutting is $180 plus or minus. Straw is used in high corn silage dairy rations here so the clean no mold straw is $140 plus per ton with short wheat crop on the horizon. Not good weather for making dry hay here so that market looks strong.
Corn prices here cash bid have come up $1.10 per bushel in the last 6-8 weeks with the basis now half of what it was then so there is concern for the volume of crop for our area. Beans are only up cash bid here about 60 cents which means that the local market is not too worried about having enough protein and basis is still almost 80 cents.
I am planning to sell my small 3 cows with calves and a heifer this summer and with high forage concerns not much interest in the cows. They will give me $300 for a two week old bull calf but barely cull cow price for the cows.

Cash basis here is $4.10 with 35 cent basis. Beans are $8.14 with a 75 cent basis.
One issue that is cropping up here (pun intended) is that seed like sorghum-sudan and oats are very hard to find as many would plant these crops on their prevent planted acres and harvest for forage later as the USDA is allowing that his cropping season. With a lot of corn and beans going in late here what we really don't want or need is a hot dry July as the small plants will have minimal root mass and shallow as well which can lead to very poor yields and growth.
With wet fields a lot of forage harvest is really delayed and thus much lower quality and that means buying more protein during the next feeding season. With record dairy cull rates, record dairy exits and now questionable feed volumes and qualities for much of the Mid West milk production is dropping and will continue to drop more rapidly in the coming months. That will raise prices and maybe considerably but the last 3 years have created a huge hole for many in the dairy industry. Many are gone by choice, Wisconsin leads the Mid West if not the nation in farm bankruptcies and foreclosures and many that are staying have seen significant equity erosion.
