He was working hard on that otter. I never saw sawdust used on the hide while fleshing.

Dang, looks like it's still winter up there. I had to mow my lawn last weekend.

The cob grit helps the flesher grab the fat,and keeps it off the skirt.

Have always use sawdust also. The cross cut sawdust from my chop saw works the best. Do not use plywood sawdust as it has splinters in it. After using sawdust give the pelt a once over with your small hand flesher and remove all of the excess sawdust. Sawdust also helps keep the fat and grease out of the fur at the skirt.

Boco, How does the cob grit work on beaver fat, nice job on that otter! Maybe NTA would subsidize one of your Demo's down south. I thought you'd be taller, eh!

I'm shrinking with age, lol.I clean skin beaver so don't know how it would work on them.I think there is too much meat on a rough skinned beaver, and it is more shaved than scraped. A few handfuls around the edge would probably keep a lot of grease out of the fur when doing beaver on a beam.

Nice work Boco. I wonder where a fella could find corn cob grit in my area ? I've got chop saw dust.

Les contact Andersoncob it's a 419 exchange, look under Taxidermy trade for the grit size. commercial mink farms may have an extra bag, runs around 30$ bag
It will go well with that tumbler you are going to make.

I have a 45 gallon drum full of used grit o cobs from cornblasting. I cut it 50/50 with fine sawdust from my table saw, and it works amazing on otter, and keeps coon fat manageable while fleshing those greasy buggers.

I thought Boco was coming to lay a haymaker on gibb for suggesting sawdust while fleshing. LOL!

Boco, what were you spraying on the hide before you put the cob grit on it?

It will go well with that tumbler you are going to make.

What size grit are you using? I used to use 1/8" but recently I have been unable to find it. Tried 1/4" and IMO too course. Last year I bought a bag of the grit they sell for blasting and it seems too fine to me although it does work.

If you look in Jim's Tour of the drumming Blog he did he shows the bags that the auction uses. Auto body shops will add another bag when they get theirs delivered her, barter always works.
