the last pair i bought were steiner night hunter and i've had them for 18 yrs. They are still sound but i want a new set.

I bought a pair of Leupold BX-2 Acadia in 8x42 about 12 years ago. I absolutely love them. They gather light extremely well and at dusk I can actually see better through them than I can without them. After about 7 years my daughter found them and left them in the yard. I found them when I was mowing (fortunately before I hit them) but they had been there several days through a lot of rain. The right tube had quite a bit of moisture in it. I sent them in telling them it was total negligence that caused the problem and within a week I had a brand new set in the mailbox. I can't imagine anybody makes anything much better than them in that price range and their customer service is top notch.

You used to get Nikons for around $300, don't know what the price is now. When I was comparing good glass a few years ago I looked at all the European brands (Zeiss, etc), and the Nikons were pretty close imo, and about 1/3 the price of European. I went with the European anyway, but the Nikons were very good.

Don't be cheap when buying binos, you'll be happy later on that you bought good ones; or should I say, you'll be sorry if you buy cheap ones, especially if you will be doing a lot of glassing. Headaches aren't fun.

I bought a pair of Vortex Diamondbacks in 10X42 a few month ago. Had Steiners before those and the Vortex are way easier to carry and clear as a bell. They do well in low light as well. Got a pair of 8 x42 for the missus and she loves those as well. On boat deliveries when I have them hanging around my neck for up to 30 + hours at a stretch, it makes a difference. The Steiners stay at home and the Vortex's come with me most days.

Bought wife a pair of 10x25 Swarovski for bird watching. Found them online. They needed to be repaired. Returned them for free repair. Look for lifetime warranty.

Only paid $65.
