Its been a week since the flooding started and still the devastation is amazing. A total of 15 bridges on state highways are completely gone, with countless others with the approaches washed out. Still have over 500 miles of highway closed and will be for a long time. A dam broke, sending a 11 foot wall of water downstream wiping out a 500 head feedyard full of steers. Another local farmer is missing 91 head of cows that were calving. Two people are still missing, may never be found. Our county had issued a travel ban on all county roads due to wash outs. 75 percent of the roads are not passable. We had 18in of snow on the ground that melted overnight along with 3in of rain in 4 hrs. With 4ft of frost nothing could soak in. The donations are coming in by the semi load. We will get through this, but will take along time. NebraskaStrong.

Did the water go down yet?

Water has went down here, with the river still running bank full. The worst has moved down to western Iowa and northern Missouri. Feel bad for those folks also.

People sometimes use humor to help cope with the nonsense.

I saw this the other day. Made me laugh.

I finally made it to my property on the niobrara. Looks like you lowered a giant lawn mower over the entire place for just long enough to strip the bark off everything that it didn’t tear out. I didn’t lose near what others did, but what I did have is gone. Not sure if it’s worth rebuilding.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Devastating for sure. Perfect Storm material there. Video footage on TV is unbelievable

This wall of mud & debris is headed south for New Orleans, along with all the other water from the midwest. Friends of mine came back from Mardis Gras and said things are already at flood stage down there.

Will be challenging times for many for sure. Hang in there, focus on the positives.

The missouri river is right at the top of the banks here in central Missouri. and forcasted to stay there until it drops so unless we get a significant rain we will be just fine with very little flood damage from jefferson city to st Louis.the Missouri river channel is way larger here and flows way faster. A 2"rain woud change things though . I feel bad for everybody upstream.

I've seen pics from Niobrara, what a mess. Going to be a long time before things return to normal. The amount of ice slabs that washed in is amazing. Have friends that live there. They had no water for a couple of days, but is back up now. Cougar, good luck with whatever you decide. It would be a tough decision, such a beautiful area.

Crossed the Jim River today it was well out of the banks there, most places were not that bad looking, a lot of stock dams were over filled but the roads were dry no problems. The Big Sioux was high but nothing that was a "oh wow" moment just high the potential is there if it warms up quickly!

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

I have been to a lot of those areas hunting and it was awesome to see and experience. I hate what has happened and hopefully will get a chance to come up somewhere and lend a hand when things settle down. The one thing I have noticed that makes me proud to be a sportsman and an American is the people. Their determination and the desire to band together to help each other. I am sure it will happen there as it should. That is what makes us who we are that our neighbor is valuable to us. When I say neighbor I mean Americans from North South East and West. I live on the gulf coast and we get hurricanes. I have been very fortunate as I live somewhat inland on high ground. I however never forget all the people from all walks of life that have given their precious resources and time to help out whenever tragedy strikes. All who are affected are in our prayers and with Gods guidance and the American spirit it will somehow all work out.

We are flooded here and the lake can't pull any water because of the Missouri. All that water in Nebraska has to come here and isn't anywhere for it to go.Will be interesting what the Corp does.

There is a reason they are called "FLOOD PLAINS"! The topography of those areas ( flat/level ) were shaped by Ma Nature long before any man set foot on this continent. The definition of "Nebratha" by the native american translates to "Flat Water", suffice to say they saw their fair share. Civil engineering projects have tempered and lessened the effects of the weather conditions here but this time it got us. I grew up along the Missouri and now live by the Elkhorn and have seen what they can do. Just glad that the death toll was no higher and we can rebuild......the mike

We are very lucky compared to a lot of other people.

My son and I were flooded in for a week, last Thursday till this Friday am. Watched helicopters plucking neighbors off roofs in the distance the first and second day, crazy. Still cant get in and out of our place with regular vehicle, have to ferry via 4 wheeler. Lots and lots of washed out roads. No water got to main level of our house. Was with in 6" of main level Friday night. Took out water heater, furnace and a couple freezers in shop. Pay $3900 a year for government flood insurance and it doesn't cover whats in basement or out buildings. We already knew that but grrrr.

Got basement (unfinished farm house type) pumped out and house water back on Thursday. Nice to crap inside again! LOL A neighbor on the other side of washed out road took us to town for a new water heater, all our vehicles are still on this side. Brought it in with 4 wheeler trailer and got it installed Friday. that was a great shower! Slowly getting back to normal.

Had a small win last Friday, took boat right from the front yard and whacked 10 Snow Geese. Ended up 3 miles south of our place by the time we got them all rounded up. Weird to drive a boat over roads you were driving a truck on a couple days before. Brined and smoked the Geese so that whole thing gave the mind a break for a while.

Flood took our supply of split wood the day after it took out the furnace, must have something against heat! We had enough wood in the house for the week. Cut and split a bunch more firewood yesterday to re supply, felt good to do something "normal". LOL

Life on the Elkhorn River, wouldn't trade it for anything!

If you are waiting on an RTS shipment we are planning on getting all orders to town on Monday depending on rain. Inventory was all up high and dry so no worries there.

Good luck and stay safe out there!

Shawn

I agree Shawn, a lot of people have it much worse. Those along the Missouri River may be in for a long summer. Feel horrible for them. There is a lot of snow pack that must come this way yet. Good luck on your clean up.

I've heard a rumor that I hope is true that there's semi trucks heading to Nebraska with hay and fencing supplies and who knows what else many a rancher appreciated the help that was givin after the wildland fires that we had last year.

Yes, I know of trucks from Wisconsin and Iowa and possibly Colorado and Kansas. It's amazing how people will come to the aid of people in distress. I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated.

A Beaver swam by yesterday when we were taking a break from cleaning up. I just looked at him and said "Truce!". Splash of the tail and he was gone.lol Not looking like spring Beaver trapping is in the cards this year. Only 5 days left of season.
