Nope fox squirrel would kick the butt of the grey no matter which one was trying male or female.

They do in Mo., Not uncommon to see a very large Grey with a lot of Orange on it's legs/back.

Nope … doesn't happen. Some greys have redish color on them and people think they are a cross.

I’ve heard that the fox squirrels will actually castrate the grays

The little red squirrel will do that. I don't think a fox could keep up with a grey in a foot - tree race.

Funny, because hereabouts the greys run roughshod over the foxes. Not the size of the squirrel in the fight...

I've seen some pretty grey colored fox squirrels. Used to hunt black phase grey squirrels a lot near Westfield. And last spring I saw my first ever blonde phase grey squirrel, looked straight out of the 80's.

I have no idea but given the array of squirrel colors, including white, it seems unlikely that color can be used to make a determination about potential crossbreeding.

I don't think they do. Greys are lots of colors here from all black to typical grey pattern. Some are black with red ears. They always have the same shape and act the same here and the fox squirrels always look like fox squirrels. I would think that if they cross bread it happen all the time and they would be like our coyotes with a bunch of mixes.
Once grey squirrels get into and area here you won't have any fox squirrels around.

Just passin through

We have grays in town with some all black and it is like there is a force field because outside the city limits we have fox squirrels. They do not mix for some reason. I always thought it was crazy.

I've noticed greys tend to like thicker forests, more cover. Fox squirrels are more likely to be found in open farmland, wooded pastures and fencerows. I see some mixing of area, but not much.

This has been my experience too.
Many, Many years ago, My friend and I put this video on the internet. This was at a time of dial up connections so the video had to be kept as short as possible. My friend did the filming and I am the rascal doing the skinning. I think the only place we put it was on rim fire central. It went far and wide.

The fox and gray squirrels mix down here. The grays come out a little earlier in the morning than the fox squirrels.

When I started squirrel hunting in the 60's, I rarely saw a gray squirrel where I hunted . I would see plenty of them in Columbia. Now I rarely see reds while hunting. I do seem to notice a more balanced mix in town. I am not sure that I know the difference between a red squirrel and a Fox squirrel. But in the areas where I hunt, the grays will send the reds packing, when the grays move in the reds get scarce.
Years ago I hunted down the ridge behind my house. I would see mainly reds until I got to a certain cross fence. Once I passed that fence, it would be mainly grays. It was that way for years but I don't hunt down there now as property changed hands. And just so you know, the cross fence was not that tall.

Got a shot a minute ago of this Piebald Fox squirrel licking road salt off the concrete where I park my truck in the winter and the salt and ice melt off my truck. I got this little adapter that goes on my phone and then you clamp it on a pair of binoculars and you can take pics through them.

This is a fox squirrel, no grays anywhere close.

Nice color phase fox.

I have also noticed the fox squirrels wake up later and go to bed sooner than the greys.

When greys and reds cross, they make kit squirrels.
