They do in Mo., Not uncommon to see a very large Grey with a lot of Orange on it's legs/back.

Nope … doesn't happen. Some greys have redish color on them and people think they are a cross.

Nope fox squirrel would kick the butt of the grey no matter which one was trying male or female. Funny, because hereabouts the greys run roughshod over the foxes. Not the size of the squirrel in the fight...

I don't think they do. Greys are lots of colors here from all black to typical grey pattern. Some are black with red ears. They always have the same shape and act the same here and the fox squirrels always look like fox squirrels. I would think that if they cross bread it happen all the time and they would be like our coyotes with a bunch of mixes. Once grey squirrels get into and area here you won't have any fox squirrels around.
Just passin through

We have grays in town with some all black and it is like there is a force field because outside the city limits we have fox squirrels. They do not mix for some reason. I always thought it was crazy.

I've noticed greys tend to like thicker forests, more cover. Fox squirrels are more likely to be found in open farmland, wooded pastures and fencerows. I see some mixing of area, but not much. This has been my experience too. Many, Many years ago, My friend and I put this video on the internet. This was at a time of dial up connections so the video had to be kept as short as possible. My friend did the filming and I am the rascal doing the skinning. I think the only place we put it was on rim fire central. It went far and wide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xy4i13HIjA&has_verified=1

Got a shot a minute ago of this Piebald Fox squirrel licking road salt off the concrete where I park my truck in the winter and the salt and ice melt off my truck. I got this little adapter that goes on my phone and then you clamp it on a pair of binoculars and you can take pics through them. This is a fox squirrel, no grays anywhere close.

When greys and reds cross, they make kit squirrels.
