I don't know if it's salvageable seeing those dark areas in the green areas. Wipe the green and dark down with 3% hydrogen peroxide and it will kill the bacteria that's causing the decay. Green belly is not a serious defect until it turns really dark brown or black, then you may start to see some slippage of fur.
The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

After it dries give it a good hard brushing on the fur side. Then you will know. It will be downgraded regardless because it wont survive the dressing process in all likelihood.

I think you will be Ok That doesn't look to bad to me.. Do the peroxide thing or use bleach to kill the Bactria.

doubt you will have any problem. I keep bleach in a spray bottle for just those kinds of instances. some days in SC you can get a green belly in a 2-3 hour trapline check trip

That was no hatter beaver. It is a good spring hvy with prime leather and by the skirt, nice colour, and no RR and would have sold well at auction. The light green on the belly is no problem but the black marks on the back is a downgrade. It will likely go as a hatter now and sell for about half the price of its original value at auction. Regardless you wont lose much money because of its small size.

You are living in the past, Boco. If it gets a slt( old VSL) grade or worse it is getting sold ( or bought back ) for hatter prices irregardless of the fact it is a good shearable beaver.
P.S. good job on the fleshing.

Yep It's a hatter market now.
I caught a $150.00 beaver today so I really don't care. I probably should have just let It lay In stead of hauling It out.

Not according to my most recent fur return. If he hadn't let it lay there would be no dmg grade and it would have been a garment skin. LM hvy=$17.16(garment) LG sl dmg=$10.50(hatter)

SLT is not a damage grade. It is minor imperfections. and 1X to LG are selling for $13 to $9 depending on color. Hatter price. American money.

You are just talking avgs,My assessment is for his NY skin, and the difference in that skin as a dmg grade(hatter) and if it had not been tainted(garment). He lost about half value on that skin because it will be a dmg grade and go as a hatter now. That specific skin would definitely have been a garment skin had he not let it taint.

I been told too many times" trappers can't grade fur" to go out on that limb.

Guaranteed that pelt would have been a garment pelt had it not been for the dmg,and worth double. I am familiar with NY beaver pelts as a lot come to North Bay.Its easy to see that is a late winter pelt by the leather, the size from the lines and the color from the underfur on the skirt. Also no scars or clips showing on the leather.Good pelt except for the taint. So it is still not much of a loss, instead of 15 bucks he would get 8.

Nice to have you admit that trappers may be able, to actually, grade fur. You think Beav can? I'm not grading any beaver from a picture and without seeing the fur side.

The one I got today has no clips or rubs. It's real nice dark brown It's going to stretch blanket size. I hauled It out In my otter sled so no drag damage. 330 right behind the ears with the trigger on the bottom. Haven't skinned it yet so I'm not sure if there are any leather defects.
But I'm betting It's going to bring hatter prices unless I can find some one who wants a un tanned beaver.

No RR on this one. So If I send It and I only get $12.00 are you going to kick in the difference?

I would say anyone who does any amount of tanning and manufacturing can evaluate a raw skin fairly accurately.
