Who's the best maker of the AR-15 platform? I've always been an AK guy but I want to try out an AR

I don’t know about “best” but among the best are Daniel Defense and LaRue. I know LaRue rifles have won the international sniper contest. I have a Rock River that is way more accurate than I expected an AR to be.

I built mine for my use it's simpler they a guy thinks the advantage of building one is it's 100% what you want when it's done. Like traps some guys buy a AR then spend a lot of bucks getting it to where they want it. If your going to play with it and resell it in the future get a built one lots of good options out there many different models to chose from or places that will build you what you want.

X2 on rock river if you want to buy one off the shelf. If you want to assemble one stag makes good lowers rt or left hand and white oak arms makes awesome uppers. A lot of the competitive shooters use white oak. Mine will shoot under 1/2" with good ammo. Be sure you get a Wilde chamber as it allows you to safely shoot .223 rem. Or 5.56 military ammo.

If you are an " AK guy " it don't matter as even the bargain basement AR's will walk all over an AK in the accuracy department grin

I’m in the middle of a build right now. I used some of my fur check to buy a White Oak upper. Should be here by Friday. They’re spendy but not unbelievably so. They do have a lead time on most items. Only thing I would suggest is whatever you do don’t buy polymer lower.

It might be worth your while to check out Palmetto State Armory, they have some really good stuff for the money. I bought a .308 and a 6.5 creedmoor in the AR-10 platform and they shoot under 1/2 inch groups and a friends grandson won a national match with one of their AR-10's in .308 that was stock. I have some of their stainless barreled AR-15's in .223/5.56 and .224 Valkyrie's and they shoot as well as a barrel from White Oaks that I have that was the SDM in .223/5.56 I am a dealer and I have sold a ton of Palmetto uppers, lowers and kits and everyone has been happy. With the money you save you can get a good trigger.

Not all poly lowers are junk been running one for years on one of mine with no problems there are junk ones out there. I had a soft poly magazine once you could load it set it on the table and it would unload all on it's own. LOL

Law Dog, is a gun that shoots both .223 and 5.56 more accurate with one or the other?

If you're just wanting to try out an AR, don't spend too much. Build your own, it's cheaper and super easy. I built my lower at the kitchen table in about 20 minutes. It was actually kind of a letdown, I was hoping it'd be more of a project than that. It was almost too easy. I used an Anderson stripped lower with a PSA parts kit and a PSA upper, with magpul stock and grips, with a 15" m-lok barrel shroud. Total cost was about $500.

Anderson Manufacturing has worked well for me. They build a lot of stock lowers for other companys. Made in Kentucky. I have the RF85 products, very low maintenance, cleans up with dawn soap and hot water. No lube. Seems weird but that's how it operates. I also have a Alex Pro Firearms .224 Valkyrie from Minnesota that's probably my fave to shoot and well built. just my .02
