This right here is old school, and your traps "may" come out more authentic, lol. [Linked Image]

55 Gallon barrel on a few bricks and a weed burner torch, leave room for the tip of the flame to heat a tub of wax at the same time. Pull the traps out shake them a bit then dip in the wax next to the barrel then set on cardboard.

how many traps you have ,you can always cut a barrel off half way just make sure you burn barrel out first start a wood fire inside of it then boil traps

I wish I could find a 30 gallon barrel. I think it'd work well.

Old School here as well.
First, have your traps adjusted and tuned.
-Boil traps in Lye, 1 lb. - 1.5 lbs. per ten gallons of water
Add Lye to cold water.
Boiling in Lye will clean traps.
Rinse traps as they come out of pot. Place on plywood and rinse thoroughly.

Change pot to clean water.
-Add1 lb. to 1.5 lbs. of powered dye to hot water.
Rinse off excess dye when removing from pot.

Counting coon traps and predator traps have between 100-150 traps. I had planned to get a barrel and cut it down to use but wasn’t sure if it would work well since it’s so much bigger than the fryer. I agree the 30 gallon barrels would be perfect.

The metal lick tubs for cattle work great. Around here there is a $10 deposit on them so that is the going price. 1 of the ranches I trap told me to help myself, he never picks up anything and they are spread all over 8000 acres.

Didn't go to the same school as hern and i'm NOT saying he's wrong i.m saying if you can get some black walnuts sumac or hemlock bark the tannic acid will clean all but the heaviest rust and dirt I use a turkey fryer burner and 3/4 of a 30 gal grease drum/bolt on handles I got mine from the quarry I worked at but garages or jiffy lube places might use 120 lb grease drums also same thing grease comes with a bag liner so that gets thrown out additional cleanup comes when I SIMMER the first batch of traps oil grease wax and crude comes to the top and gets ladeled off I use this for new traps too if there not coal black it doesn't mattered logwood dye does this also Green walnuts and early sumac berries work best as weather leeches out tannic acid which is what colors steel Again use lye power wash whatever you want there is no set method chiseled in stone

55gal barrel cut down flipped over for firebox, welded 30gal barrel to the 55 for the pot...works pretty good, chuck it full of wood walk away do whatever, add wood as needed...look on Craigslist for food grade barrels you can get them pretty cheap and different sizes....

I'll check Craig's List for a 30 gallon barrel. Thanks.

Randy, I'm not sure where people get lye.

Hardware stores carry Red Devil lye. Around here you have to ask for it because they keep it hid for those who want it for honest use. The druggies make meth out of it and they’ll clean all of it off the shelf if left out. My buddy told me he saw two fighting over it one time. As someone said be careful with it. I splashed one drop of water in my eye 30 years ago and it damaged it to the point bright headlights hurt it at night and I have to squint sometimes.

No one carries it in my town anymore for just that reason. I had to order it online.
