The trap on the left is a victor 1 1/2. What brand and size is the one on the right? #1 or #1 1/2? About a 4 1/2" jaw spread, no marking whatsoever, adjustable pan. Picked 6 of them up at a yard sale years ago. The Vic 1 1/2 has about a 5" jaw spread. Thanks for the help.

looks like an early model duke 1 1/2, with a chain that's not original. just guessing though, with only a top view.

The chains are the exact same on all 5 of them.

I would say pioneer or Montgomery.

I have nothing clever to put here.

The levers are different, riveted pan and straight link chain. I thought of Big Bear trap company, But I can't find a picture.

#1 or # 1 1/2? Seems to be better built than the victor. Standard value?

I never thought of pioneer or big bear, as I never used those brands. way too light weight for a monty. levers look wrong for a duke, but the same slightly oval shape of jaw. if anyone remembers the big bear "baby bear" trap, did they or the pioneers come with straight link chain?

Almost looks like a Montana 1 1/2 special, or the long liner.

The tips of the levers are bent over at a right angle on Big Bear traps.

Did Bridger ever make a 1 1/2 like that? Looks like a Bridger chain, though I know they could of been changed out. Maybe, Northwoods if the springs end crosses the back of the lever but i thought they were all square pans..

Scout, if you wire brush with a little Wd 40, maybe something will show up on the pan

I tried that and there is nothing. The guy I got them from had waxed. As I said earlier, about 1/2" smaller than a Vic 1 1/2. About the same quality. I am just curious what they are. [Linked Image]

this is an interesting thread. this trap is not a victor, b&l, Montgomery, Northwoods, big bear, bridger, or herters. top photo shows the EXACT shape/contour of the early duke 1 1/2, thin jaw material, riveted pan post, and pan slightly offset toward the dog side of the trap. the later dukes have a better pan post which is welded, and the cross piece is welded, not riveted.

this trap appears to be an import. im not familiar with the montana long liner model, but this is not a montana 1 1/2 special. im also not sure if the montana company still offers the 1 1/2 long liner anymore, and ive never seen one personally.

if you took an old style duke, and added a straight link chain, youd have EXACTLY what you see in the top pic.

try this,,,,,set the trap and pull the pan down to level. on the old dukes, when the pan was in a level position, it sat slightly above the top of the jaws. other brands sit level with the jaws, or slightly below.

it appears someone sent a duke 1 1/2 to china to be copied, and they put a straight link chain on it. there are several companies that have started importing 1 1/2 sized coils that im not familiar with, and as I said, ive never seen the montana long liner model.

one more thing, the chain is most likely the original chain. its attached with a cheap imported rivet/j-hook, and these usually break if opened and reclosed to change out a chain.

Thanks for the info Fossil! The yard sale was probably about 15 years ago I got them at. It was an older gentleman I believe from up north. I even bought 2 of the sawyer type traps from him. The jaws on these type are thinner than the Vic's. But it is a solid trap. I'm going to assume a #1 size?.?.

im positive it would've been marketed as a 1 1/2 size, not a #1. the chain is the only thing that makes me question if its a duke. you could email the duke company, and montana trap company, and ask if they used a riveted cross piece in the past, and if they ever used a straight link chain. id email montana first. sorry I couldn't be positive on the origin for you.

The springs I'm not sure on but the rest looks very similar, even the chain to a buddy of mine's #1 Pioneer. I think 160user is correct.
