Saw a show last night where they are extracting DNA from woolly mammoths found under the permafrost in Siberia in the hopes of making elephant-mammoth hybrids that can once again rome wildlife reserves in Siberia.

The scientist involved (George Church) seemed to think if they could get pure enough DNA that it was going to be easy to do.

Whatcha think? Good idea or playing God?

That was an interesting show. Some of items they found in the permafrost were amazing - the moth, the wolf head,

No opinion on your question. I probably won't live long enough to see it happen if it does.

then we'd have to bring back the Sabertooth so they have a Natural predator or Cavemen with spears then permits along with Protesters and lawsuits not to mention driving electric scooters because i'm sure Siberia is melting due to climate change

Leave God in charge he does a better job

I wonder if the rest of that wolf is part of the buy-backs still at Nafa?

I wonder how many preference points it will take in Wisconsin to hunt one.

I'm wondering at what point you will find ground woolly mammoth next to ground buffalo in the supermarkets?

But in all honesty it would be just amazing if they could do what they're talking about doing; and with modern gene editing tools it sounds like this could happen sooner rather than later if their DNA samples aren't too degraded.

Why???? Where do these whacky ideas come from? How about the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone, and the damage it has caused, just to satisfy some do gooders. In New York another college professor decided to introduce Yukon Lynx into the Adirondack high peaks. They did not realize there was no food for them, the lynx all took off, and thankfully they did, or we would be having the same problem that the Maine trappers have.Give me one sound reason why we would want to bring back wooly mammoths in this day and age. Just to say we can?

Mastodon or woolly mammoth? I'm no expert.

I don't see how that could happen.First finding any viable DNA after that long is a reach.Second, Mammoths were a different species than an elephant they would not be compatable.
It certainly would be cool if they could.
Some humans from Northern Europe have Neandertal genes.Scientists could selectively back breed a neandertal over many generations. These experiments on humans however, would not be socially acceptable today.Perhaps in the future.

Doesn't make sense to me to bring back a species that went extinct because it could not adapt to our modern climate.

I doubt they could do it. If they can, I would vote no. Playing God in my opinion.

I think it would be kinda cool.

I don't feel as though its playing God as he's already done the hard part. Be like saying putting eggs in a basket is playing chicken.

I think God made them extinct for a reason. Though man was around at the time, man wasn't a cause per se. Besides, their flatulence will screw up the "green new deal" grin

Every human with the exception of Sub Saharan Africans carries Neanderthal genes. If your not black, your part Neanderthal.
