No breeding involved. It is gene editing with a tool called CRISPR . Just like they have been doing with crops.

Really if they are just gene splicing it’s done all the time in plants, they can change human genome to cure diseases before someone is born, and they can sex semen for cattle. They have had some success with crossing legumes into grasses, which is probably a bigger challenge than in animals. So I wouldn’t say it’s impossible.

Right Bob. They cut and add swathes of genes to get desired effects. A good example is corn with Bacillis thuriengensis DNA so that is is toxic to any lepidopetera that consume it.

Science fiction. This has not been done with mammals.
I know cloning has been done and clones have had offspring but transgenetic organisms like the fast growing salmon with other fish genes are sterile no?

This is cell implantation not genome splicing but this was 2017 and some more in 2018 so I would bet it’s possible.

Not science fiction. They have created pigs already.Though it may be hard for us older ones,to fathom everything that is going on--thimgs are happening that 50 years ago were thought impossible.
Just look at what you are answering these posts on--a home computer. Not possible--not in our life time--LOL.

No,bringing back a mammoth is science fiction.
This is almost exclusively done with mice in the study of diseases in humans.

May the mammoths they create, deposit their science fiction on your front steps.
Flight by man--science fiction fot 1800s man.
Landing on the moon--science fiction to 1950s man.
Recreation of mammoths--science fiction to Boco.
Hard to believe or understand everything that is happening in our fast changing world.

Wooly Mammoths are actually not "pre-historic" animals. As Bogmaster pointed out, the last mammoths died out on Wrangel Island only around 4000 years ago. The Great Pyramids were already several hundred years old by then. As for all the North American mega fauna being hunted to extinction....who knows.......... Google the Younger Dryas Impact.

Well, one thing is for certain … if they don get one created, it won't be long before some politician proclaims they are 1/4 wooly mammoth when they apply for a teaching job or running for congress.
I think we should bring back the Dire wolf and turn them loose in D.C.

If they do bring them back better keep them out of Maine or our fishers will eat them.

Seems I read a book where a mammoth was killed in North America in the 1600's by a white guy named Sackett! Don't recall his first name, but the author of the book was L'Amour.

I've talked to some old timers that went to a dinner they were served 'woolly mammoths" at. Was interesting listening to their stories.

I would eat a mammoth, if they are successfully brought back and I would eat a well frozen, ancient mammoth too. I would like to eat an elephant also.
