SO without going into detail my son and I are headed for Rio Grandes in Kansas. Trying at the very last minute to throw together a hunt and was hoping someone on here
could give me some good tips on public places to go for a few days. We hope to be there for the opener next Wednesday the 17th. Thanks.

Your best bet will be walk in hunting. Wildlife and parks publishs a brochure they are listed in. Its probably on line if you do a search. Can look at satelite for the countys you are looking at for habitat. Walk in as a rule has lots less pressure and some of it is very good.

When you say walk in hunting is that basically public hunting?

Walk-in Hunting is a program where KDWPT leases private land for public hunting. Check the KDWPT website. Not all WIHA land is open during the spring, so check the posted signs for dates.

Ok, thanks, I will have him contact the KDWPT for advise. Anybody have low pressure, good areas they may recommend?

I don't want to discourage you but i'll be honest. I live in Missouri and used to hunt Kansas and Nebraska every year cause they open before Missouri, the first ten or 12 years were awesome, never saw another turkey hunter. but then after all the exposure from the outhouse channel and the like the place was over run. the last year I went, about three years ago, I couldn't even find a place to hunt that there wasn't already a truck parked there. mind you I never used to see any other hunters in these places. True story for ya. One piece of public ground was 125 acres, I was the first one there about an hour and a half before daylight, then some other trucks show up and by the time I was heading out another truck comes blazing into the parking lot and a guy jumps out and walks over to everyone and has the gall to say... you guys wanna draw straws to see who gets to hunt? 125 acres, 8 trucks and I was the only one with just one guy in the truck.

don't be afraid to knock on the door and ask permission if you see birds someplace you cant go. be surprised how friendly some people are in this state
