I see they make oil filter presses a guy would not think it would be worth it to crush a oil filter for that little bit of oil or maybe I missed something.

I'm sure one could get a government grant to start up something like that. Like Law Dog says, it does seem like a lot of work to get such a small return but when you add up the volume it may surprise you.

When I worked is shop years ago most of the cars at that time took 4 1/2 quarts of oil so between that 1/2 quart and draining of the others cans a guy had a case of oil on his bench in no time, it does add up. I have a spot in my drain pan that has a rim with a open spot in the center to drain the oil filters over time it seems to work well.

we used to pay to have our oil and oil filters picked up for recycling when I worked for a garage.
if they get paid to pick up oil filters as say 100 dollars a barrel and you can get 40 barrels in a truck you collect 4k for a truck load then turn around and sell the scrap at 85 dollars the ton
if they are also selling the waste oil to an asphalt maker they must get something for it. say they have a bulk tank that will hold 10K gallons and they net 500 gallons from each 13 hour run of the processor run 5 days a week and get a pick up of waste oil every time you have a full 5k gallon transport worth.
the reason for the crusher at the service station was to get more filters per barrel if you crushed them you could get 2x as many in a barrel
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

That's good business sense there! Makes money on scrap steel. Probably makes decent money on the waste oil. When I was young I remember recycling the oil on the gravel drive to keep the dust down. We don't do that anymore!!

I save mine for the winter and toss them into the wood stove to burn out, then recycle the steel can.
