I need 1000 board feet of red oak. $2 a board foot seem reasonable? That's a quote I have from a local mill.

I would double check that. He might be giving you the bulk discount but that still seems cheap.
You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

what I mean is that lumber mill run= percentage of clear along with knotty or heartwood pieces also mixed sizes 4-5 -8- width or all the same width here in Mi. we have a lot of oak better logs go for veneer lesser logs sawed and the grade and pellet lumber is sorted don't know your purpose, flooring, barn siding or if the mill knows what you want hard to just throw a # out there

I'll have to call him back. I talked to him briefly. I told him I wanted clear so I'll have to make sure we are on the same page. I want it to make baseboards, door and window casings and moldings for my house.

Ask the following
Is it kilned dried
What grade. If you want clear then it should be slecect and better
Ask hin if its random widths. That is typical
Ask is this in the rough or sufaced Rough should be 1”. Hit and miss is 15/16. Planed both sides slightly. Or surfaced to what you want
Is it slr. ? Straight lined rioped? Thus is o e edge straight edged. If your a small hobby guy and your buying from a place that can do this you should. Usuall its a 100 dollars a thousand bd ft. Also you should ask fir it to be hit and miss another 50 to 100 a 1000bd ft. They cant slr without hit and miss plane
Ask if bd ft is based on green talley. Or net tally
Green is pre kilned net is after. If you buy on green expect to get about 900 ft but pay for 1000
Thanks, this will be green, he does not have a kiln yet. I'm not sure what blade he has in his mill, I assume it's a band saw mill but I will ask. I doubt it will be straight edged but again, I will ask. This guy is just a backyard start up operation so the best price I will probably ever get from him is now.
I BELIEVE IN MY GOD, MY COUNTRY AND IN MYSELF.

Keep in mind that green lumber is going to shrink.
For what you say you are using it for; you should be OK. The shrinkage is much less along the length, than the thickness or width.
Still, expect shrinkage, and install accordingly.

oak both red and white has been goin up pretty good here.
just an opinion Finster but i'd check into kiln or even air dried and see how much of a difference in price.the amount of time and waste you have when done may very well be more than worth the difference and i believe you would have a better product down the road.

Not sure if your going to let it air dry, use it green, or kiln... Around here to dry green lumber in a kiln it runs about .40-.60 a bf....
Usually it should be air dried a bit before it goes in the kiln...
Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes...... Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....
