Why is the turkey population down? Or is it just that the birds have gotten smarter? 25 years ago they were all over in my county, even walking through yards with regularity. The numbers (at least what I've seen) have dipped so low that this will be at least the 2nd year in a row that I didn't buy a license. I realize that there's pockets with high numbers and that some hunters have no trouble bagging 1.

Interesting! I have no facts or scientific research to share but I beleive there are more turkeys in my area (100 mile radius). I could be totally off base but from my time in the outdoors I beleive there are more birds now then 20 years ago. I spent over 300 days last year fishing, trapping, hunting or just being in the back country and I see birds in the last 10 years where I never had before.
I do see a lot of sign where turkeys been killed by prey. They also need the habitat to survive and that is very critical with turkey IMO.

Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

Our Turkey population has really taken a tumble the last few years. Although it does seem to be better this year. I wonder if west nile virus has effected them like it has the Grouse population?

It is what it is.

Have no idea where in WI the OP is concerned about but up here in north central WI we just set an all time record for snowfall in a season. Hard to find an acorn with 4 feet of snow on the ground. Still have well over a foot of snow over an inch of ice in most places. My season starts Wed. LOL

Predators are impacting them more in my opinion, but you wouldn't know it by this morning. Had a big ole Tom at 18 yards this morning and my nephew missed. Does it make me a bad mentor that I was kind of glad? Turkey was gobbling like crazy and I kept encouraging it that I might have rattled him. Excited to go back out there tomorrow!

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain!

I think predators play a big role too.

Good for you, to mentor, MarshRat.
