We asked our local warden this question at a trapping seminar a couple weeks ago. He didn’t know the answer and said he would get our answer by the end of class, but I think he forgot.

I assume it’s not legal to check your traps daily by the use of a cell trail camera? Meaning, have your camera pointed right at the trap, so if you do get something in your trap, it’s going to take a pic and send it to you.

I’m not sure I would trust it and would check them anyway, but if I were to get a text picture sent to my phone with a bobcat in it, that would be pretty exciting. Well, for me it would be.

Has anybody here tried this?

I would figure that's similar to using drones to check traps, meaning it wouldn't be legal in Wisconsin.

Might be one of the gray areas not up to date with technology. Rule basically says you have to check the trap in given time period. If you can show you logged in and had a time stamped photo of the trap with everything in place.. Might be a loop hole??? You go do that let us know how it works out LOL!
I know years ago we had someone turn us in for not checking traps. We were spotting them from the road with spotting scope only walking in if a catch or something out of place..Traps were purposely set so we could see them even if just popped straight up in the trap bed.
Warden came talked to the farmer who's land we were on and he told him we were there every day. Only dove where we were ok, suppose to drive, parked where we were ok to park.. Checked our traps every day one stop being right in farm yard so he seen us there...Turned out the neighbor who turned us in was just an anti and was told we were all good. Doing nothing illegal..

I think spartan cams and maybe others will let you schedule an event. Say every day at 7am it sends you a picture without being triggered. That way you'd be covered with the 24hr part as long as they aren't requiring you to be physically there. The downside is if you catch something at midnight you would either have to take care of it at midnight or get continuous texts until you could get there. I would definitely get an answer from your local co before trying it.

There is nothing that gets your blood pumping like watching a cat work your set!

We can't use basic trail cameras in Nevada from August 1st to December 31, and can't use transmitting trail cameras from July 1st to December 31st. The deer and elk guides ruined that for us. Ever water source in the main units would have 5-10 cameras on it. I personally didn't have a problem with it but I think the Wardens were sick of dealing with fights over who was messing with who's trail camera.

If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

Gray area. One warden would say you’re ok. Next one would cite you for it. Nature of the beast.

How does anyone afford a camera for every set?

The camera on the trap is already being used by some ADC guys. It can save you lots of miles and check time. Also watch the customer which is sometimes an issue. The only downside at least in the West is that cell coverage is necessary.

I wasn’t planning on using a cell cam on every trap, but maybe the farthest, hardest trap to get to. Ya, I will need to find out for sure from the wardens, but I would probably still check them in person just to be safe. I was just curious more than anything if it was even legal.

I would think if you had your cam set so you could get a photo on demand, then you checked it. If the law says you must physically check it then cam will not be okay. Our laws say you must check the trap every day...not how. I call the cam and have a photo to show it was checked. I'm just arrogant enough to argue it. Might get a warning but that's itl
I consider this one of those questions best not asked.
