Hello. 15 years ago when we gutted our house and remodeled I also put in a new septic tank and sewer line. My Grandpa did plumbing/trenching for a living. We put in PVC gasketed pipe. There are no lateral lines. House, tank, pipe to ditch. I also planted a wind break at the time. The little saplings seemed spread out at the time. A pin oak that is 30' and 2 cedars of 10' are within 15' of the line. My concern is over time the roots will find the joint, work in, and clog it. It may take years but that is how long I plan to be here and can easily cut them down now and avoid problems versus when I am in my 80's, a big problem and I can't do it then. What are your thoughts? Thank you for your time.

It is possible that the very fine root tips will work past the gasketed joint. Once inside they invite their friends and the clog starts! The trees mentioned are close enough to be a concern as they grow. Without digging up and replacing the gasketed pipe with a solvent weld (glued) PVC joint cutting the trees now may be your only option if you don't want to gamble!

I'm no expert and someone more knowledgeable will hopefully chime in. Certain types of trees are more prone to have roots invade septic line. Mainly maples and willows are the ones I've heard are worse than others, from what I've been told. I've been told adding copper to the drainage line helps burn back the roots from entering drain. I e never heard much bad about oaks or cedar type trees from being more apt to damage drainage lines.

I wouldn't get overly concerned with it. I work in irrigation for a living and have put in many miles of pipe and have yet to have a problem with tree roots -- even my house that was put in in 91 hasn't had any septic problems and we removed a couple of oaks and had a poplar grow right over the septiic line and have still not had any problems. I really wouldn't worry about the difference between gasketed and solvent weld pipe either. By the way the leach lines are another story.

In my humble opinion you will be forced to replace it before then

Roots will get in gasketed lines in time.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Roots will get in and the copper stuff is ineffective. I would cut them down now. I owned a small motel that had cottonwood/pecan tress growing around it and I now hate cottonwood /pecan trees. Find a hair root dig the pipe up and find a wad of roots 4-6' clogging the pipe.Had to use a sewer water jet every couple of years on the pecan tree roots.

Occasional maintenance with a root cutter on a sewer eel can keep em out. Then treat with with mainline root killer also. Cheap mainline sewer eels can be bought and a worthwhile investment. Also sewer lining or pipe bursting is always an option. Lots of folks don’t realize that cutting down trees over sewer lines doesn’t remedy the root issue. Stumps and partially ground out stumps will still send out fine roots in an attempt to grow
