I assume by joists your talking rafters and yes you have to run purlins and screw to them otherwise your tin would sag personally i'd use 2x4s but I don't know your roof size or snow load

normally 4 screws 9 in centers as opposed to 2 on 16 in centers and your overlap would be unsupported

We used 5/4 on 2' centers for our house. Holding fine here in northern pa. I also work a 12hr rotating swing shift. On nights right now too. They suck.

5/4 around here comes in at 1 1/16” or 1” just depends on how wet the decking is...
5/4 is usually the rough thickness which is 1 1/4”
Gordenhere might have your solution...Plywood, you can get the thickness you need and still support the steel...

Yeah. My buddy has a saw mill so I got alot of our lumber from him. 1x4" should be plenty for you. Fasten them to the rafters well.

If your door is that close to the eaves, you may not be able to open the door the whole way when the rafters are installed. If you have gutter already above the door you could do this This would allow you to put a steeper pitch to the roof and you will not have to shovel snow off of that roof so often. I like this idea , as I now see where 2x6's may not work due to door clearance and getting a good pitch. If I go up to 6x6 post how far can I space them ? That looks like 12', with 4x4's I was going to go 8'. -Thanks
