If it was WS I doubt the ranch is paying anything. WS is subsidized by money being kicked in by the county and government to offer a service to ag related businesses to help protect their resources. Some of the WS are spread thin from lack of funding so they do what they can. I agree if WS can't handle it properly then they should just let the land owner know so that someone who takes things serious can get the job done properly.

Just recently back from a sheep hunt in AZ. Real cheap and no draw if you shoot them with a camera. Easy to pack too.

How about fishing? A spread like that and deep pockets think they would have some great bass fishing ponds.

There Is NO surface water on the ranch. It's all cap rock and every water source has to be drilled.

The YO is too commercialized in my opinion. There’s 100’s of other ranches across Texas that offer same animals and style of hunting for half the price. It’s a beautiful place but caters to the wealthier client for sure.

Not sure but It seems there are several owners and I think It's kind of split up between them. And they may have sold some off over time.
I know we went through several key pad gates while we were hunting there.
Are you from that area?

Bout 200 miles from me, I’ve hunted all around that area before but never on it, Talked to a few different managers from different sections over the years about trapping and buying cats but have never personally been out there

I am about 50 miles northwest of what used to be the YO. I went to the first and second grades in a school on the YO. It was a school that belonged to the area ranchers and had two classrooms and restrooms. There was two teachers and a driver for one bus. Eight grades were taught there and after that the kids had to go to either Harper, Leakey, Rocksprings or Kerrville.

The original YO has been whittled down over the years from over 500,000 acres owned by the Schreiner family to nothing today.
If the part you were on is now known as the YO Headquarters it is three parcels that were sold and is owned by two billionaires named Sadler and Harber.
If one of those owners told you he only had an eighth grade education, you can be assured that he was pumping you full of pure old Texas BS.
When the last 29,000 acres was put up for sale 5 or 6 years ago it was listed for $85 million which included only the land surface with improvements. No minerals or animals. I think it was later splint in 6 tracts or so.

I had many good friends that worked on the YO when it was still a working ranch as well as a hunting and dude place. The wildlife and game manager was also a good friend. I have taken many rattlesnakes off of that place back in the late 50's and early 60's.
I always liked to hang out around the Jaguar enclosures they had at that time. Bob Snow was the game manager and had gone to Central America to trap and bring in the Jags.

I am glad you got to see a part of Texas history and I hope you come back sometime.

J.D.

Thanks for that Info Cedar hacker. Your screen name has some meaning. Because they sure were Into removing all the cedar.

I know they did talk about the school that was either on the YO or close by.
Our guide was Richard Allen and he was from Kerrville. Don't remember the ranch mangers last name but His first name was Eric.

If I ever come back It won't be hunting on the YO way to rich for my pocket.

Hey Beav, you had the big boy as a guide. Richard was the top gun of the Dallas Safari Club and he now guides for them or through them all over the US and maybe the world. I have seen him on several TV shows as the guide.

Eric White is the manager again as of a couple of months ago. He was there for about 15 or twenty years and then left for some reason.
He has been manager of another big hunting ranch about 25 miles East of me for the last several years. The ranch has a fence line real close to a bat cave that is a big tourist attraction where people go to see the bats come out late in the afternoon. A ranch employee under Eric's supervision came along the fence line while a bunch of tourists were at the cave and he was running a fogger that was putting out 36% permethrin and some other chemicals. Needless to say he fogged all those people and some of them got sick. Eric was let go last fall and went back to work at the YO hunting place sometime around the first of this year.

It was an experience and I'm glad I went.

That's how I remember the conversation about Eric and him being gone then just coming back. Seems like a nice guy. They even gave my friend a extra day free since he hadn't shot his Axis deer yet.
It wasn't easy getting that deer. We spotted about 8 of them In this wash and we drove around It 10 times and could never get a good shot. And they just wouldn't leave so I suggested to Richard that If he got down In that wash he could probably push those deer out and my buddy could get a shot. I don't think he liked that to much but he did It and It worked. LOL

Thanks for the info.
