If I have non pressured turkeys how long would it take me to learn how to call them in? Never did it before.

Not long. But, each turkey is different, I’d do three or four quiet yelps. Then wait 15 minutes and let the Tom come in. I find a lot of people call too often and too loudly. Also, every hen is different, no hen sounds perfect. They would all lose in a turkey calling contest.

More experienced turkey guys will be along to give more advice.

Good luck

Not long , easiest to use is a slate pot call or box call. Get on YouTube , plenty of how to videos out there.

Calling turkeys is easy if you find the right bird you can do no wrong. The wrong bird you can do nothing right.

Easiest way is go listen to the hens in the roost and when they fly down. I have been making turkey calls both friction and mouth for 19 years now. And I tell every one that comes to me to learn how to call, I tell them listen to the birds, they tell you the truth. Learn the words to say, how they sound is not as important as the word. For example my best bird came on the last day of the season and it was a bird that many people was hunting and messing up on. not them just the bird was good. The others was great callers with crystal clear notes. Great callers and hunters, but the bird was on to the game. I went in and said the right words but gave it to him in turkey ebonics LOL washed out and flat. I pulled the trigger on him and he was a bare chest beat to snot chest tail was missing feathers and he had a 1 3/4 and a 1 7/8 spurs. not every one can be a world champion turkey caller but every one can learn to speak turkey if they just listen to the hens. And what Bowwhitetail said is absolute LOL

Shot mine Friday walked right in with 2 hens.
Had nine in for the wife today closest was 40 yards, not with a 20 gauge.
They are very hened up right now. Won't leave a there hen for nothing.
I take that back one real dumb one today that was almost in range, the hen was at 15 yards and he turned and left her. LOL

Try out a pot call or even a good push button box call....pretty easy to use a pot call...Yelp is pretty easy and quite deadly I think....

Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes......
Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

I’m partial to pot calls but boxes are easy as well. Both really shine in the fact they are easy to use to make a variety of basic sounds Yelp, cluck, purr, whine, cutt. I use either a slate or glass pot 90% of the time but I always have a diaphragm call in my mouth for close up work and hands free.

One other thing I like about pot type calls is that you can carry a pocket full of different strikers made of different materials to get a lot of different sounds from the same call

40 is easy shot esp with a 20 gauge if you set it up right.

For a new guy being ready is a trick that is often missed once they are coming in stop calling and get the gun pointed in that direction and be able to fire with as little movement as possible once you know it's a gobbler!

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

As with any type of game calling the little things are important. at first these little things seem like rocket building but as we learn they almost become second nature to where we do not think of them but still do it. I watched my son calling a bird a few years back, he was doing a nice job. after wards I asked what was he doing, he looked at me and said calling the bird????? LOL He didn't even realize he just worked the bird with out thinking. At first just work your yelps and purrs and try to work in a cluck or two, but don't over do it. make your words and watch the birds body or listen to the return vocals, you are looking for the double and triple gobbles of excitement. and getting closer. if they are humdrum half hearted gobble many times I will go find another bird. Like was stated before ready birds are nice not ready are a night mare. I will try to work the hens to see if passive or aggressive. bring them in and tom will be in tow. I call a lot but I do not call loud. best advice I can give is get out there call and have a good time you will learn a whole bunch than getting over come with killing.

took a buddy out this morning and worked a bird in and he ended up missing him. went to a different spot called 2 hens and a nice tom in but not close enough. I never knew they were there he never gobbled once. every hunt is different. like said above try to find a tom that is responsive and it makes for a better hunt. ive been home by 6.00 am and been done and have hunted till 1.00pm and come home empty handed.calling is a very small part of it knowing where the birds want to go is the key to a successful hunt a lot of the time . good luck.

Yep had them come in on a straight run from 200 yards and others turn the and walk away on the first cluck

Closest kill was one a boss hen dragged in when I started an “argument” with her. Less than 10 yards.

My favorite thing about turkey hunting is you never know how they will be on any given day

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

Almost every hen I've ever heard before I saw her had me thinking it was another hunter who was in need of some calling practice.

Eh...wot?

^^^This is my basic spring gobbler philosophy right here.^^^

Some days they're hot, some days they're not.

Find a hot one and you could throw a handful of pebbles into a soda can and shake it and he'll come running. Find one that's not and no amount of the sweetest calling in the world will get a rise out of him.

Eh...wot?

I think the biggest thing a new caller can do when just starting out is, call turkeys to learn instead of call turkeys to kill. After a few years of calling to learn the hunter will see what to do to make the kill, If they choose to. But if the hunter is so focused to kill then the never see what works and more important what doesn't work. I do not call to kill the bird even after all these years, I call to see the bird and how they behave coming in. I can adjust my calling to the bird, then choose if I want to kill that bird or as many have said on the birds that just don't want to play I can let it go and find another one with out wasting 2 hours. the only way a hunter learns to call is a lot of that didn't work LOL but it comes in time.
