Has anyone thought about checking traps with a drone?

Yeah, but, lots of folks would rather shoot them down.

Some states it is illegal and in others it’s just more trouble then not due to trigger happy people or even environmental reasons

Then there is the drawback such as flight time even on expensive drones with it measured in minutes, along with recharging time and expensive battery cost if you want to have backups

And if you are looking at cheap drones then all of the above is compounded with shorter flight time and range ect.

For the cost of a good drone I could outfit myself with top of the line traps and other equipment

And a cheap one and is ok as a toy but that’s about it

I do have a mid level drone and it is fun to play with and I have used a serious drone rated for commercial use and at least to me neither would be a substitute for checking traps myself

too much important info to gather while checking traps for them to ever have any use for me.

I know of several cases where someone has shot one down and in every case I know the shooter has had to pay for it and in some they have also had to pay for lost time and ability to use it until they had a new one ( pain and suffering)

A friend of mine had one shot down and the shooter had to pay for the drone (18,000) then had to pay him for lost wages and time lost since he uses his in his business which he was doing at the time it was shot down

And to top that the shooter was also charged with distruction of property and discharge of a firearm inside the city limits

Good info. I can see it's uses in controlled situations. say so wet you don't want to go across a land owners field or roads in a vehicle. But ya'll are all right as far as it being a standard practice. I was really just curious. I know several charter captains that use them and my son is big into salt water kayak fishing he uses one a lot. Of course there aren't many shooters out on the water except during duck season. I honestly never thought of all the trouble not to mention one more thing to keep up with.

Drones should be illegal, except for military or legitimate business or farm use. Drones are an invasion of my privacy. Drones are causing real problems for commercial airlines, and if you are too lazy to check your traps you should not be setting them.

This is exactly the attitude you run into with drones.

To be legal and where most useful, is at low altitudes where a lot of people actually believe they own the airspace.

Realistically, drones are a lot more useful for preliminary scouting than trap checking.

As for penalties for shooting one down; the very least one would get for one of my drones is seven years of bad luck.

Since it seems drone owners dislike their toys being shot down.

What if I'm practicing casting my fishing pole. And you fly your drone into my fishing line mid cast. The tangled line in the propellers causes the drone to crash.

Is that a reasonable situation? Will the Drone guy pay for my fishing line replacement?

I think if you are going to shoot down a drone, it is prudent to scatter a few clay pigeons around the property. Then tell the judge that you missed.

In my opinion if someone is too lazy (not saying youre lazy at all turkn) to go check their traps on foot and use a drone then they probably shouldnt be trapping. What if you have a critter in a trap, then youre going to have to go out on the line anyway.

I think it's easier said than done. It would be too easy to miss a small critter in your trap by not inspecting it in person, and you certainly wouldn't be able to see if a trap had been tripped.
With all the rain we had this past season I was really tearing up a farm road getting to my traps. Just for giggles I flew my drone to the far end of the property to see if I had any coyotes. The resolution on my phone was not enough to see very well. Downloading the video and viewing it on my laptop was way better, but still not perfect. In the end, it was entertaining to try, but not a reliable trap check. Also, you'd have no chance of viewing any trap with tree coverage. You'd be limited to open areas.
My drone is a DJI P3 Advanced. It takes 2.7k video.
