Not long. But, each turkey is different, I’d do three or four quiet yelps. Then wait 15 minutes and let the Tom come in. I find a lot of people call too often and too loudly. Also, every hen is different, no hen sounds perfect. They would all lose in a turkey calling contest.
More experienced turkey guys will be along to give more advice.
Good luck

Easiest way is go listen to the hens in the roost and when they fly down. I have been making turkey calls both friction and mouth for 19 years now. And I tell every one that comes to me to learn how to call, I tell them listen to the birds, they tell you the truth. Learn the words to say, how they sound is not as important as the word. For example my best bird came on the last day of the season and it was a bird that many people was hunting and messing up on. not them just the bird was good. The others was great callers with crystal clear notes. Great callers and hunters, but the bird was on to the game. I went in and said the right words but gave it to him in turkey ebonics LOL washed out and flat. I pulled the trigger on him and he was a bare chest beat to snot chest tail was missing feathers and he had a 1 3/4 and a 1 7/8 spurs. not every one can be a world champion turkey caller but every one can learn to speak turkey if they just listen to the hens. And what Bowwhitetail said is absolute LOL

Try out a pot call or even a good push button box call....pretty easy to use a pot call...Yelp is pretty easy and quite deadly I think....
Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes...... Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

I’m partial to pot calls but boxes are easy as well. Both really shine in the fact they are easy to use to make a variety of basic sounds Yelp, cluck, purr, whine, cutt. I use either a slate or glass pot 90% of the time but I always have a diaphragm call in my mouth for close up work and hands free.
One other thing I like about pot type calls is that you can carry a pocket full of different strikers made of different materials to get a lot of different sounds from the same call

lot of good advice so far Shot mine Friday walked right in with 2 hens. Had nine in for the wife today closest was 40 yards, not with a 20 gauge. They are very hened up right now. Won't leave a there hen for nothing. I take that back one real dumb one today that was almost in range, the hen was at 15 yards and he turned and left her. LOL 40 is easy shot esp with a 20 gauge if you set it up right.

For a new guy being ready is a trick that is often missed once they are coming in stop calling and get the gun pointed in that direction and be able to fire with as little movement as possible once you know it's a gobbler!

Calling turkeys is easy if you find the right bird you can do no wrong. The wrong bird you can do nothing right. Yep had them come in on a straight run from 200 yards and others turn the and walk away on the first cluck Closest kill was one a boss hen dragged in when I started an “argument” with her. Less than 10 yards. My favorite thing about turkey hunting is you never know how they will be on any given day
Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!
If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

Also, every hen is different, no hen sounds perfect. They would all lose in a turkey calling contest. Almost every hen I've ever heard before I saw her had me thinking it was another hunter who was in need of some calling practice.
Eh...wot?

Calling turkeys is easy if you find the right bird you can do no wrong. The wrong bird you can do nothing right. ^^^This is my basic spring gobbler philosophy right here.^^^ Some days they're hot, some days they're not. Find a hot one and you could throw a handful of pebbles into a soda can and shake it and he'll come running. Find one that's not and no amount of the sweetest calling in the world will get a rise out of him.
Eh...wot?
