While returning our son to college last night our curiosity was excited regarding the many traffic stops we witnessed. Among a sea of traffic seemingly moving about near equal in speed how does one determine which vehicle to stop?

Do they have a spin wheel of manufacturers on the dash and give it a spin? "TOYOTA", we are stopping Toyotas today. lol

Typically many city cops pull over the oldest looking vehicles in poor conditon, driving over the speed limit. Typically highway patrol pulls over any convient vehicle, going over 11 miles per hour over the speed limit. Small town cops typically pull over out of towners, exceeding the speed limit.

How do you know that all of those vehicles were stopped for speed? How many unmarked/marked patrol units were out there running plates? How many of those vehicles had a patrol unit behind them prior to the stop? Were they using radar or lidar? Lidar is vehicle specific. How many were stopped for reasons other than speed?

Drug interdiction cops have things they look for. Out of state rental vehicles, vehicles with partially obscured license plates, or an old and new vehicle obviously traveling together, for example.

Well, last year my wife and I were headed home on a Sunday from her parents place on Interstate 94, I got the cruise set on 78 and the speed limit is 70. Now the police in Wisconsin usually give ya ten over the speed limit when all of a sudden a State Trooper lights her up and is right behind me, so I pull over wondering what the problem is.
He says I was speeding and I said yes sir, I was going 78 and other folks had passed me at a higher speed. He says I know that but there was nobody right behind you so it was easy for me to pull out of the median.
He tells me he was listening to the Packer game and it was halftime so he needed to fill a couple stops on his shift.
He comes back and gives me a warning ticket and wishes me a good day. I ask him what the score is and he laughs, the guy was a real huckster.

When I was younger I was got pulled over often. Young adult with a newer and very nice car = fishy here. I can't count how many times a day I would have police follow me while running my plate.
There's one county here where going 1 over will get you pulled over.
