In the south, during spring and summer, I would eliminate bait altogether. Use lure only.

Depends on the ants. Some places down south. You can put bait in a small dirt hole, and the next day the ants have hole plugged. IF you use an earth auger with 4 inch bit, you MAY be ok with bait for a few day. Point is = Be on location if you use bait. Ants will find it. Just a question of HOW many days it takes for them to find it

I have not found a way to stop the ants. Sheeps wool will just be at the bottom of the ant bed with the bait. flat sets and lure is about the only way to go. Right now you get about 2 days before the ants ruin the set. SO you can rebait every 2 days or switch to something else. When it gets warmer you get about 10 min. Also if the ants dont get it the flies will just turn it into a maggot pile.

IF you make a hole with a BT-45 earth Auger, ant will or can take, alone time to find it. With a 4 inch hole 18 inch deep, it going to take a while for ants to find it. Depends on the area. Fish oil or liquid mice works well in places that have lots of ants. I use lots of it down a punch size hole for spring and summer coyotes. Location is the key.

i dip a 6" q-tip in Gusto (but anything skunky would work), rub it above the set and then place it in a small ball of sheep's wool down the hole without ant issues.

The More smells the better. Squirt a shot of fish oil, liquid mice, or other down hole. Then use the Sheeps wool with your lure on it.

Fish oil doesn’t work around ants in SWGA. Even on a tree they will attempt to build a mound over it. Everything else about bait is correct. Any meat bait results in a bed being made. Going to attempt some sort of liquid bait and just lure this year.

What about strips of beaver fur staked down in a dirthole ? Thought about trying it as a change up to wool.

You can use a staked down squirells skin if you like. Dont have to put it down a dirt hole. Just use to tent stakes and set trap back like you would any flat set. Caught 100s of coyotes down in south Alabama with staked hides and gland lure.
