Oddly, my best onions always came from seed. Sets and plants never seemed to do as well.

Plants do better, and don't go to seed on you like sets will, and they get bigger onions, IMO.
I have planted seed to get plants and then just put them in a row. I works fine. The best way is to use a pinch of seed, in each of an 18 cell deep flat filler, ;and let them come like chives...plant like that with 1/2" of soil over the seed. When they get healthy looking, just plant out the biggest ones in a row. I have sold thousands like this in flats, and it is not a money maker.

Started mine from seed in little 72 cell plug trays. Planted them out in march- they are rocking! The nice thing about seed is the selection of varieties, if your buying sets or plants- your relatively limited in varietal selection.

For years I grew from plants ordered from Johnny's- but I had some problems with them the last couple seasons- so I started my own.

Ailsa Craig are still some of my favorite fresh eating onions- easy to grow and they often get huge!

I grew some Alisa Craig for the first time last year. Ate the last one this week. They keep well but was disappointed in the size compared to the Candy onion. I sell all the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pound onion2 I can raise. They just don't seem to get there as well as Candy onions. Mike

I always called them sets and slips. I guess slips are what you are calling onion plants.
We always plant slips/plants and have great luck producing hundreds of pounds of onions a year.

Around here, most onion sets ( bulbs ) are winter onions, usually whites and yellows. The slips ( plants ) are sweet onions ( Walla Walla for example ). They need planted a little later than the sets. We use up all sweet onions before fall, as they normally won’t keep all winter.

sets produce squatty flattish onions. Plants produce large and round onions.

One thing I haven't had much luck with Ailsas is keeping them- although that may be for other reasons. Where do yogurt your seed/ stock for the Candy Onions?

I have been doing plants for over 20 years. I have had very good success, with size and percentage making good onions in general. The last couple years things have not worked as well so this year I am trying sets for the first time in decades. I won't have any plants this year to make a comparison but I will keep track. Garden still way to wet to till and more snow and cold rain tomorrow.
