Several excellent Non-Glyphosate tolerant sweet corn varieties exist for 12.00-20.00/lb. Bodacious, Serendipity, Honey Select do well here on the Great Plains Corn Belt and are registered for many pre-emerge corn herbicides (Prowl, Dual II, Challenger, etc.) and many post emerge ones (2,4-D, Charger Max, Impact, Permit, etc. even Treflan/Preen if watered in,,, Check the labels) so the xtra $ for the convenience of RR varieties should really be thought over. RR varieties here are about 260.00/2 lbs minimum purchase... my take

I was surprised their new better corn was 2x higher than gotta have it, only way to buy their overpriced stuff is to use the 50% off coupons,
You can't find corn as good as theirs
Kernels are still crispy after one or two years in the freezer

I'm sorry but if I am growing and eating it I don't want it resistant to anything ! Hierloom all the way. This GMO stuff is out of hand. Most will never realize or admit it that thier health issues stem from this stuff. On topic kind of ironic you have to pay more to harm your health.

I spoke to a USDA researcher who told me that it takes about 40 years for a change in food production to show up in human reaction/side affects.

We see all kinds of autism and ADHD and other growing mental illnesses in this country, and everyone wonders, "Why is this happening now, and it wasn't like this before?"

Well, what changed in agriculture practices 40 years ago and has been ongoing since? What new things have changed since then and what might be the implications going forward?

Sadly, our country has a mentality of accepting ease, luxury and cost savings now, and never expecting there could be a day of reckoning for it.

Maybe a bit off topic but will seed corn be good for planting this year that I bought last year? I have Gotta Have It and Northern Sweet from Gurney's that I bought and used last year. Still have about half of the package left. Am I risking it by planting last year's corn, this year? It's been stored in a closet in my house.

Remember your training from grade school grasshopper.....

Wet a paper towel, fold it in quarters. Put 10 seeds on it and slip it into a ziploc bag. In 7-10 days you will have your answer.

Atrapper what RKG told you is the best way, but in the future put that leftover seed in the freezer. The best way to stop the germination process that I know of .

Thanks RKG and Golf ball. I have planned on using it in this year's garden but have also heard horror stories of corn being planted and not coming up or coming up spotty with old seed being the likely culprit. I figured there's a whole lot more knowledge on this site concerning seed germination than I'll ever know.

You cannot beat Bodacious and Incredible. Have found some 7 year bags in the freezer and can't tell it from fresh. Sweet corn is serious stuff in our area and that's all I have grown for 20+ years. Mike

Could be could also be planting to deep in cold wet ground to shallow in dry soil 1 1/2 -2 in is good slightly pacing the soil for good seed/soil contact

Heat is the worse thing for all unplanted seed corn (sweet or field). I found some (3 lbs) in the freezer that was 13 years old and planted it in a food plot. Good yield and the stand was only slightly less than current seed. Not as good tasting as the newer varieties but that is to be expected. Here is what I do if I have left over seed. I bag and seal the corn from that year's planting and next spring I purchase enough of the SAME VARIETY added and mixed with the old to cover my needs. Have done that for many years and may have seed mixed in with the new that is 4-5-6 years old. As long as it is kept cold I have good stands. Don't mix varieties as we are after taste and not bushels!!!.

I lean towards heirloom whenever I can. Aside from just enjoying being in a garden, I do it to eat healthier. Gardening for me is time-consuming and costs me more, especially when we're canning, than just going and buying it. I KNOW where my veggie's come from though. Sure taste good too. Just came in from tilling when I saw this thread, and I was wondering where my wife put the corn seed. Sweet corn is one of my favorites to watch grow...and eat. laugh
