Hey guys. After a few weeks of reading posts, finally decided to make an account. Looks like a cool forum so this is me introducing myself. Long time whitetail, waterfowl, and turkey hunter. I did a good bit of trapping when I was younger but it was mostly focused on coons. I recently got an offer to take care of the coon possum and coyote problem on a 300 acre piece of ground in Kansas with 180-190” whitetail being taken about every year, in exchange for me doing some bow hunting. So of course I jumped at that chance.

The ground is full of yotes, never been trapped and a river runs right through the middle so they are getting pretty thick and my goal is to get a good amount of them cleared out during the rest of April and May to help the fawns when they drop. I have called 2 in and got em that way but figured trapping would be more efficient.I’m going to go with mostly dirt holes, but I’m trying to figure out what type of lure I should go with before I buy it. Didn’t know if gland lures worked as well in the warmer weather. I was thinking about going with either hawbakers #400 or June’s canine candy, Along with urine and some of that ground mouse meat. Going to go with Bridger #2 trap wise. Any lure or any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

not sure about Kansas but here in the southeast fire ants are a huge issue this time of year (and all warm/hot months). i don't use bait much at all when it's hot like this, just a lure. Gusto or anything skunky works pretty decent.

as for all dirt holes, don't put all your eggs in one basket, have different sets, all have advantages and disadvantageous and using many different ones ups your odds of catches and lowers the education rate of the coyote.

Thanks Jetcat- going to look at throwing some flat sets at them too. And that’s a good point, the ants usually get rough around here also. Will probably just try a few lures and see what happens.

Welcome to Trapperman! My advice is to keep searching the forum cuz theres tons of knowledgeable folks on here. Pretty sure any of the baits you mentioned will work just fine. What part of Kansas are you from? Good luck and glad to have you on board.

Definitely look at land trapping in the archives. Tons of good info from extremely experienced trappers. Welcome and good luck.

Lure presentation is crucial during warmer seasons, but coyotes can be lured just as easily, if done correctly.
Finding the coyotes at times will be the biggest challenge, as during hot times, they don't move as much and their diet changes dramatically.
Coyotes still move though and keep those boundaries in check, often your best areas of capture.
Several years ago, I had a thread called : What droppings teach us, which shared the study of droppings, which showed that placement by canines at specif points, were on purpose, as a form of marking boundary lines.

Lt when you say lure presentation is crucial during warmer seasons, are you referring to type of set or acutely how its presented or the location of the set?

Had a few things I was also curious about, got all of my traps boiled and dyed but I didn’t know if I needed to boil my stakes? Going to be using 18” rebar cross staked
Also I’ve had a few coons the last few days, will blood from a dispatch bother them? I read about getting rid of any coyote blood so I wasn’t sure if it was the same with other critters. Appreciate the help

18 inch crossed rebar MAY not be enough, if in sandy soil . In the mid 90s before I went to bullet type stakes, I had a big coyote of 2 pump out double 18s So i went to 24s . Blood in catch circle May or may not matter. I have seen some re=makes catch and some not. I think it has lots to due with Your area. Coyote density. And how much that area has been trapped. If you have extra traps = set a remake, throw dirt over blood OR scoop it out best you can. OR Pull trap and set it on down wind side of catch circle

That’s what I was kind of worried about, I will probably end up buying some of those earth anchors.

Not sure what the dirt is like in your part of KS, but 18 should be more than enough unless in blow sand or muck. Make sure and actually cross stake them like X and not just drove down at slight angles. I have used 16-18 inch rebar cross stakes on yotes for years with no issues. I have even had rainy periods with multiple catches on the same stakes make them so loose you could pick out each stake with your fingers (loose as all get out) one at a time, but the two crossed held just fine. I did however restake before resetting the traps on these after discovering how loose the stakes were.

Got out and scouted quite a bit this weekend, found tons of sign on the driving trail into the property. Might be over thinking this but all of the grass on both sides of this trail is about shin height as shown below and didn’t know what kind of sets I should put down this path with that height of grass. I was planning on using dirtholes but with the grass being so high I didn’t know if it would have any visibility or if I should just tear up a little of the grass around the set. Also thought about just setting a nice size log to the side of the trail for a flat set. any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Also got my first set out elsewhere if you got any critiques

I was also wondering about how close it is best to set around their den. I believe I have it narrowed down to about a 200 yard area from hearing them barking like nuts in there both mornings and nights this weekend. It’s in a cottonwood grove but with the time of year it’s not the most pleasant to be in those thick trees but if it would be worth getting as close as possible Id get some sets in there.
